Characteristics of artworks are different from other functional products. Artworks are experiential goods with unique characteristics. Accordingly, a separately study needs to be conducted on consumption types according to characteristics of artworks. In addition, a positive attitude is required on them. Since art consumers are the grounds on which artworks can be acknowledged for their values and existence, studies on art consumers must be carried out in depth with consideration on the specificity of artworks. The purpose of this study was to classify art consumers into art-oriented, investment-oriented, decoration-oriented and relationship-oriented types, to analyze the difference in demand for artworks according to the purpose of purchasing artworks, artists, places of transaction and policies as components of the arts market, and to suggest a means for professionalization of the arts market. Theoretical study and survey were simultaneously carried out in this study. The survey was conducted using questionnaire. Based on the classification of art consumers deduced from preceding studies, 400 subjects including 200 customers who purchase artworks and 200 potential customers were divided into two groups. Two-way analysis of variance was used to test the hypothesis on the difference in components of the arts market according to types of art consumers. Principal component analysis was performed to extract factors. One-way ANOVA was used to examine the difference in items under purchasing purpose of each factor of the arts market. Factor rotation was made to converge by repeated calculations using VariMax with Kaiser normalization. Duncan's test was used to analyze difference between groups. Significance level was set to 10%. The results of this study are as follows. First is the result obtained on the difference according to components of the arts market preferred by art consumers depending on the purpose of purchasing. Various promotions are needed to provide segmented information for investment-oriented consumers who prefer Western paintings and figurative art. In terms of artworks, artists must provide segmented information and link it with relationship marketing for investment-oriented and relation-oriented consumers who prefer professional artists. In terms of place of transaction, the role of gallerists who provide bidding information for investment-oriented and relation-oriented consumers and construct close relationship with artists stood out as important. In terms of policy, consumers who prioritize relationship with art experts were highly interested in policies on taxation and donation. Consumers who prefer policies supporting artists and environment were found to prioritize policy protection on highly artistic works. Second is the result shown on the difference in components of the arts market preferred according to characteristics of art consumers and potential consumers. In terms of artworks, potential art consumers prefer Korean paintings. While they do not actually consume artworks, they have great curiosity about installation arts and media arts, and are pointed out as the reason for emergence of these fields. In terms of artists, art consumers prefer full-time artists and have greater attention on artists with whom they have past experience of purchasing artworks. In terms of place of transaction, art consumers and potential consumers prefer to purchase works through galleries and art fairs. Potential consumers prefer art fairs at which works can be purchased after appreciating and comparing diverse works as the place to buy their first artwork. In terms of policy, art consumers had higher score on all items compared to potential consumers. Third is the result shown on characteristics preferred by different types of art consumers according to characteristics of art consumers and potential consumers. Art-oriented art consumers place greater importance on characteristics of artworks than their personal tastes compared to potential consumers. On the contrary, potential consumers had no difference from art consumers in the preferred figurative form, but they place importance on colors. Decoration-oriented potential consumers are concerned about diversity of space compared to art consumers. Investment-oriented potential consumers potentially consider consumption of artworks in consideration of economic benefits. Relation-oriented art consumers and potential consumers have significant difference in all items. In other words, the relationship of consumers has great impact on art consumption. Fourth is the analysis result for the effect of characteristics of the arts market on different types of art consumers. In terms of artworks, consumers were found to regard art, investment and relationship as more important than decoration, recognizing artworks with consideration on value and investment. In terms of artists and place of transaction, the arts market interested in art, decoration, investment and relationship recognizes diversification of artists, as well as places of transaction. In terms of policy, investment and relationship are deemed as more important than art and decoration. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, professional art consumers need to prepare in advance for different purposes of collection such as artistic value, decoration and investment. Professional analysis on the arts market is required after obtaining basic knowledge on art history and discovering individual taste. Potential consumers are decoration-oriented and art-oriented. These potential consumers, in terms of place, overwhelmingly prefer galleries, art fairs and paintings. A strategy to convert them into art consumers is necessary. Furthermore, it is important to make them clarify the purpose of collection. Second, art consumers are relation-oriented and prefer to form community of art consumers and obtain transaction information from art museums and galleries. Accordingly,
