Perfectionism has both adaptive and maladaptive aspects, which has been known to be associated with a variety of personal psychological problems and pathology. This study was intended to apply counseling program to verify the potential role of self-esteem, which is an individual internal variable in the relationship between depression and anxiety which can be seen as the child's tendency of maladaptive perfectionism and an individual's psychological problems, to mitigate the negative impact of the maladaptive perfectionism. In other words, the purpose is to disclose the influence on the reduction of depression and anxiety, the psychological problem of maladaptive perfectionism, by applying group counseling for improving self-esteem to children with a propensity of maladaptive perfectionism, and to provide a substantial data for supporting psychological adjustment of children with a propensity of maladaptive perfectionism, and preventing and treating their maladjustment. The following research questions were set in this study. First, is a group counseling to improve the self-esteem effective in reducing the depression of a child with maladaptive perfectionism? Second, is a group counseling to improve the self-esteem effective in reducing the anxiety of a child with maladaptive perfectionism? Accordingly, thirty grade 6 elementary school students were selected with high maladaptive perfectionism, depression and anxiety through the pre-test of 156 6th-graders from J elementary school in Busan during Nov to Dec 2013, with experimental group and control group of 10 children who wanted to participate in group counseling and 10 children who were assigned randomly, respectively. The self-esteem improvement group counseling was composed of a total of 12 sessions, and the effects of experimental treatment were analyzed by ANCOVA(analysis of covariance)after the post-test for both the experimental and control group after the program. The findings showed first a reduction in the average depression of the children of maladaptive perfectionism who underwent self-esteem improvement group counseling, and also showed significant differences between the experimental and control group in the post results. Second, a reduction in the average anxiety was found of the children with maladaptive perfectionism after the group counseling to improve self-esteem, and significant differences were also found at post-test between the experimental and control group. Based on these results, it was proved that the group counseling focused on improving self-esteem was effective in decreasing anxiety and depression in children with maladaptive perfectionism, and it was also confirmed that self-esteem may play a role to mitigate the negative effects of maladaptive perfectionism. It implies that the improvement self-esteem may be a realistic plan in reducing psychological problems such as depression and anxiety associated with maladaptive perfectionism, and has provided a direct and substantial data for prevention and treatment of maladjustment of the children with maladaptive perfectionism. Finally, imitations of this study and suggestions for future research were discussed.
