Korea and Japan have exchanged a lot from old times and they are close to each other geographically and have a lot of common things also in religion such as Confucianism and Buddhism. So it needs to understand the attitude toward the aged in both countries because both countries have the similar issues like aging speed as well as the similarity in social and cultural situation. In preparation for the aging society, it needs to compare the attitude toward the aged in both countries and to find if there is a difference between the two countries and what kind of variables were adapted in order to renew the positive awareness about the aged and to explore the direction to provide the chance of interaction between generations. For this purpose, the survey was conducted for 180 Korean college students and 190 Japanese college students who major in social welfare. The main results of this research are as follows. First, regarding the social demographic characteristics of subjects in Korea and Japan, the rate of women was high in both countries and the age was higher in Korea. Regarding the religion, in case of Korea, no religion was the highest of 54.4% and Christianity, Catholicism, Buddhism and others in order, and in case of Japan, Buddhism was the highest of 47.9% and no religion, others, Christianity and Catholicism in order. Regarding the region where they grew up, in case of Korea, large city, small city and rural area were in order, and in case of Japan, small city, rural area and large city in order. Regarding the economic level, the rate of middle class was the highest in both countries. Regarding the experience to live with the aged and the variable of knowing the aged, the case that they had both elements at the same time was more than other cases. Regarding the experience of volunteer work, in case of Korea, the number of the students who had experienced it was higher than other cases, and in case of Japan, the number of the students who had experienced and who had not experienced were same. Regarding the education related with the aged, the students who had been educated were more than the students who had not been educated in both countries. Regarding the practice for the aged, the students who had not practiced were more than the students who had practiced in both countries. Second, regarding the knowledge and attitude toward the aged, as for the correct answer rate of the knowledge about the aged, in case of Korea, the average point was 12.09 ± 0.20 out of 24 and the average correct answer rate was 50.39%, and in case of Japan, the average point was 10.57 ± 3.07 and the average correct answer rate was 44.08% which was lower than the case of Korea. Regarding the attitude toward the aged, it was 84.33 out of 140 in case of Korea. That was in the neutral range but lower than the Japanese point of 87.92, which means the Korean attitude is more negative than Japanese. Third, regarding the social demographic characteristics and the comparison of the attitude toward the aged, there was a significant difference only in Korean subjects. That is, in case of the students who had no religion and had experienced volunteer works, the attitude toward the aged was more positive. And also in the comparison of the attitude toward the aged according to their knowledge about the aged, there was a significant difference only in Korean subjects. That is, the attitude toward to the aged was more positive as the knowledge about the aged became higher (F=4.70, p<.05). Fourth, according to the factors affecting the attitude toward the aged, in case of Korea, among the variables, the fact that they had a religion or not and the experience of volunteer works affected the attitude toward the aged significantly. In other words, the students who had no religion and had experienced volunteer works had a positive attitude toward the aged. In case of Japan, the variable of age affected the attitude toward the aged significantly. In other words, the attitude toward to the aged was more negative as they were older than others. On the basis these results, this research suggests as follows. First, the education related with the welfare of the age needs to be extended in our society in order to change the attitude toward the age into more positive way. And the volunteer works in the welfare facilities for the aged should be extended socially. Second, for the college students in order to learn about the aged more and to maintain the positive relationships with the aged, the knowledge and information about the aged should be provided through the programs and school educations related with the aged. Third, to make the aged meaningful existence, the various education programs for the aged should be developed and provided. Fourth, through the visits and volunteer works for the aged, the various opportunities to understand the aged correctly and communicate with the aged should be provided to the young generation. Fifth, in order to clarify the relation between the knowledge and the attitude toward the aged, the research on the groups with various characteristics is needed.
Korea and Japan have exchanged a lot from old times and they are close to each other geographically and have a lot of common things also in religion such as Confucianism and Buddhism.
