The objectives of this study are to develop a literacy education program using environmental print and to examine its effects on children’s literacy ability. The following research questions are established: Research Question 1. What is the composition of the children’s literacy education program using environmental print? Research Question 2. What are the effects of the children’s literacy education program using environmental print? In order to develop a children’s literacy education program using environmental print; literature is reviewed and the condition of literacy education and the demand are studied. Based on the results, a tentative program is created; followed by a pilot study and discussions with experts, whereby a main program is then created. The program aims to develop abilities to represent stimulating interest in symbols such as pictures and letters by using environmental print; therefore, to develop comprehensive literacy ability. The objectives of the program are: ‘To inspire interest in representing thoughts, feelings, and experiences through pictures and letters’; ‘To inspire interest in reading and writing with environmental print’; ‘Making use of environmental print to increase reading and writing abilities’; and, ‘Using environmental print to enhance children’s phonological awareness, vocabulary, and early literacy skills’. The contents of the program are divided into two parts: ‘Letter form recognition and representation’ and ‘Letter meaning recognition and representation’. ‘Letter form recognition and representation’ is divided into letter form recognition and letter form representation. Letter form recognition includes ‘Having interest in reading environmental print’, ‘Reading familiar letters around’, ‘Learning the relation between words and letters’, and ‘Becoming aware of phonology (syllable and phonemic)’. Letter form representation focuses on ‘Having interest in writing environmental print’, ‘Representing his/her thoughts and feelings in picture and letter forms’, ‘Trying to enjoy writing using environmental print’ and ’Writing familiar letters’. ‘Letter meaning recognition and representation’ is divided into letter meaning recognition and letter meaning representation. Letter meaning recognition includes ‘Analogizing the meaning of letters and words from pictures and shapes from environmental print’, ‘Having interest in various vocabulary in environmental print’ and ‘Enjoying reading environmental print’. Letter meaning representation focuses on ‘Enjoying participating various writing activities using environmental print’, ‘Enjoying talking about his/her experience regarding environmental print’, and ‘Making stories using words in environmental print’. In the teaching-learning method, teaching-learning principles are integrated education, lifestyle-oriented education, and play-oriented education. Teaching-learning stages are composed of search-representation-application. Environmental print pictures and materials are used for teaching-learning materials; environmental print includes environmental print related to toy, food, film and print, signboard and information board, and environmental print related to early childhood education institutions. The environmental composition of the program is composed of signs and catalogs, daily schedules, interest center name tags, item name tags, and environmental prints in interest center. Teachers take a role of environment provider, facilitator, encourager, modeler, and interaction provider. Evaluations are conducted by aptitude evaluation, formation evaluation, and comprehensive evaluation. To examine the effects of application of environmental print on children’s literacy education program, the developed program is applied to forty-three four-year-old students (experiment and control groups) studying in A kindergarten located in Seoul from May 23, 2014 to July 17, 2014. The same tests are conducted before and after the application of the program to test children’s phonological awareness, reading and writing interests, vocabulary, language comprehension, reading ability, and writing ability; whereby the results are statistically interpreted by t-test using SPSS program. The following are the effects of the application of children’s literacy education program using environmental print. First, there is a statistically significant difference in before-and-after scores of children’s phonological awareness. Before-and-after scores of syllable awareness and phonemic awareness, subfactor of phonological awareness, also show a statistically significant difference. Testing subfactor of syllable awareness such as counting the number of syllables, syllable omission, syllable substitution, and syllable distinction; and subfactor of phonemic awareness such as counting the number of phonemics, phonemic omission, phonemic substitution, and phonemic distinction, confirms that there is a significant difference except for counting the number of syllables and phonemics. Second, there is a statistically significant difference in before-and-after scores of children’s reading and writing interests. Subfactor results show that there is a significant difference in scores of value of reading and writing; whereas, there is no significant difference in scores of enjoyment of reading and writing as well as those of self-concept as a reader/writer. Third, there is a statistically significant difference in scores of children’s vocabulary between groups. This indicates that there is a positive influence of children’s literacy education program using environmental print on increase in vocabulary. There is a significant difference in expressive vocabulary and receptive vocabulary, subfactor of vocabulary. Fourth, there is a statistically significant difference in scores of children’s language comprehension between groups. This indicates that there is a positive influence of children’s literacy education program using environmental print on children’s language comprehension. Fifth, there is no significant difference in scores of reading ability as well as in scores of real reading ability and psuedo reading ability, both subfactor of reading ability. However, there is a significant difference in scores of low-frequency letter reading, also subfactor of reading ability. Sixth, there is no statistically significant difference in scores of children’s writing ability between groups. In conclusion, the results indicate that there are positive effects of children’s literacy education program using environmental print on children’s phonological awareness, reading and writing interests, vocabulary and increase in language comprehension.
