The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of balanced language activities using children’s poetry on the development of children 's literacy. Based on the results, the significance of the study is in that it verifies the effectiveness of educational activities in early childhood education. The research questions set to correspond with the research purpose are as follows: 1. How does the balanced language activities using children’s poetry affects the reading development of 5-year-olds? 2. How does the balanced language activities using children’s poetry affects the writing development of 5- year-olds? The subjects of this study consisted of 5-year-olds, including 23 children from S private kindergarten and 22 children from M private kindergarten located in Yangcheon-Gu, Seoul. The experimental group of the study was 23 children who were introduced with a balanced language learning activities using children’s poetry, while 22 children with general learning activities using children’s poetry were considered the control group. The research procedure was carried out in the order of selecting children’s poems, preliminary test, pre-test, implementing balanced language activity using children’s poetry as an experimental treatment, and post-test. The duration of the treatment was from April 2 to April 23, 2018, 3 times a week for 4 weeks, hence 10 times in total. In selecting children’s poems, 10 frequented poems were chosen among the ones that are in relation to the topic of the monthly education plan in the Nuri Program. The poetry activities were carried out 3 times a week, and the effects of balanced language activities using children’s poetry on reading/writing development in the experimental group were verified. The test tool of this study utilized what Kim Sun-young (2013) have partially implemented among a set of reading development test by Lee Won-ryong (2003) to measure the reading development of young children. For writing development test, based on the developmental stages revised and complemented by Lee Young-ja & Lee Jong-suk (1985, 1990), the test tool used by Noh Sang-hye (2012) was utilized. Based on these, the preliminary, pre- and post-tests were conducted and using the SPSS statistical program, the t-test was used to analyze the different scores between the two groups from the collected data. The results obtained from this study are summarized as follows: First, the experimental group that applied the balanced language activities using children’s poetry had a positive effect on the total reading development test of the 5-year-olds than the control group who performed the general language activities using children’s poetry. Regarding the test result of 'Reading Letters', a sub-factor of reading development, the experimental group scored statistically significantly higher than the control group. Second, the experiment group that applied the balanced language activities using children’s poetry positively influenced the writing development of the 5-year-olds than the control group which performed the general language activities using children’s poetry. In sum, the balanced language activities using children’s poetry affect positively on the development of literacy of 5-year-old children, hence it is suggested that it can be used as an effective teaching method.
