The aim of this research is to find out the misconceptions of students on light: a source, straight, reflection, refraction and synthesis of light. The subjects of this study were 45 students who are in the 1st, the 2nd and the 3rd grade in a middle school in Chungcheongbuk-do. Based on the misconceptions investigated in 2004, this study compared and analyzed the changes of misconceptions by grade, gender, level and curriculum revision.
According to the result of this study, the 1st graders had lots of misconceptions about a source of light, straight of light, features of a mirror and synthesis of light because they don't study units for light in Science class. The 2nd graders did not have many misconceptions since they study the unit during 2nd year. The 3rd graders who studied the unit 1 year ago had fewer misconceptions only about reflection of light. Although there was not a big gap between genders, girls had more misconceptions about a source of light and straight of light and boys had misconceptions about reflection of light. By levels, higher level students had the least misconceptions but, 3rd graders who were in lower level had less misconceptions on reflection and refraction of light. When it comes to the change of misconceptions by curriculum revision, even if the rate of overall misconceptions was decreased, it was increased on straight of light in the students in 2014 and the 1st graders in 2004 and the 3rd graders in 2014 had different rates of misconceptions on synthesis of light.
This study suggests that if teachers figure out causes of misconceptions on light observed from middle school students previously and plan appropriate teaching and learning styles according to recognition levels of learners, the solution of misconceptions will be expected.
