This study is about comparing two novels, written by a Korea writer Yang Gui Ja and written by a Chinese writer Chi Li, in order to compare a petit bourgeoisie between Korea and China in the 1980s and the 1990s. These two writers objectively describe their country's petit bourgeoisie literature in detail in the similar social environment around the same time. Their works have expressed obvious secularized creations. Through these works done by two writers, we are able to get better understanding of life and ideology of petit bourgeoisie expressed in Korean and Chinese societies in the 1980s. The two women writers are the leading female writers in the two countries. Because Korea was going through industralization and urbanization at that time, China was switching to a market economy from a planned economy. At this transition time, these two countries were facing the similar concerns and agonies. The two female writers started to write the novel based on their situation of age and described the life of petit bourgeoisie objectively and delicately. They not only described the life of petit bourgeoisie but also included the concerns for petit bourgeoisie's fate from the unique female point of view. That is why we tend to think highly of these two novels.
This study compared the two novels about petit bourgeoisie based on the 1980s' backgrounds in Korea and China while comparing the conflicts and agonies of people in two countries under social transition period with the following techniques. First, I reviewed petit bourgeoisie itself. I went thoroughly through the definition, the origin, and the development of the word, petit bourgeoisie. Then, I investigated the characteristics of representative comparative writers works in the two countries and in each time. Second, I compared the characteristics of Characters expressed in the novels and analyzed petit bourgeoisie's attitudes towards their reality. The two writers became a poor petit bourgeoisie because of social reform and economic problems happened in the 1980s and they had first-hand experience in joy, sorrow, happiness, and weeping in their ordinary life. Although poverty caused them a lot of pain, it became the prime mover for them to write their novels. Last, I considered the two novels' similarities and differences.
Through the above considerations, I figured in the similarities and differences expressed in the novels of Korea and China petit bourgeoisie between the 1980s and the 1990s. I also tried to find out their universality and their unique characteristics. The works of the two female writers have important implications to study for the model of petit bourgeoisie at that time. Many novels that contain the story of petit bourgeoisie have a significant presence in Korea and China, but a comparative study that compares novels present in two countries has been rare. From now on, there will have to be many more researches going on to compare many different models of petit bourgeoisie expressed in various novels written by many other writers and I hope that a large number of comparative studies should improve knowledge and add significant implications to previous studies present in Korea and China.
