Specific Language Impairment(SLI) is a disorder where there is no problem with oral structure or function or a hearing loss, but remarkable speech disruption. Because the ability of learning vocabulary quickly or combining words is not as good as normal children’s, the children with SLI are incompetent in vocabulary learning. The objective of this research is to overcome the unsuitableness of accessing the concept of “language” by using “language” method targeting children with “language” disorder. This research is intended to compare linguistically semantic representation and visually semantic representation through ‘explaining the meaning’ and ‘expressing with picture’ about the presented words targeting SLI group, chronological age consensus typically developing group(CA) and language age consensus typically developing group(LA).
The age range of the subjects of this research is 4-6 years old. 15 children of SLI group, 15 of CA group, and 15 of LA group participated in the research. To understand semantic representation, ‘explaining the meaning’ and ‘expressing with picture’ were performed. To control association effect, different sets were provided, and for equal conditions, the members were composed of the same age children. The standard score of grading was 1 score for each question by the words basic forms that have related meaning to the provided words characteristics. In the ‘expressing with pictures’ task, 1 score was given when the exact meaning of words were expressed rather than the ability of drawing was expressed, and pictures that does not have exact meaning or that can’t be recognized received 0 score.
The results of this research are as follows. Firstly, in the ‘expressing the meaning’ task, the score of SLI group, CA group and LA group are meaningfully different, and it is shown that SLI group's is lower in linguistic semantic representation than CA group. Secondly, difference of correct response type by the groups is statistically meaningful, within the each group, functional response was meaningfully different from relative, physical and systemic responses, and systemic response was meaningfully different from relative and physical responses. Third, there is meaningful difference in correct response of ‘expressing with picture’ between the three groups, and SLI group’s visual semantic representation is lower than CA group. In addition, even though SLI group’s superficial correct response score was higher than LA group’s, SLI group’s members tended to omit typical characteristics in ‘expressing with picture’ task, unlike LA group. Lastly, the relation between ‘explaining the meaning’ and ‘expressing with picture’ was meaningful, and the correlation was very strong.
When considering the result of this research and prior researches, we can’t deny that linguistic semantic representation and visual semantic representation are actively interacting. Semantic representation is the research subject that needs to be covered importantly because it is the factor that can affect not only SLI, but also language developmental disorders, articulation and phonological disorders, fluency disorder, and neurolinguistic disorder. The result of this research is expected to be used for a variety of semantic representation researches, and ‘expressing with picture’ is also expected to be used for therapy that causes interest in the clinical settings since it is closely related to ‘explaining the meaning’ in semantic representation.
