Kitsch is one of the low arts to satisfy cultural desire of the public and it has been imitated to show the value of original by culturallyabandoned people. Also, Kitsch has been recognized as low art which cannot cultivate artistic possibility. In modern society, however, Kitsch has been a way of daily life and a path to pursue a new art.
The purpose of this research paper, by process of criticizing the structural differentiation of these two cultures in "Avant-Garde and Kitsch", 1939 written by Clement Greenberg, is to newly understand the positive value of Kitsch which is under-estimated in the area of modern
art. The aim of this study is inherently not to deny the theory of Greenberg and the value of fine art. Beyond the genre of art, a dichotomous concept of Greenberg is contemporarily applied to modern society and also it has shown evidence of class distinctions. Despite efforts to broaden justice and diversification, an issue which is called discrimination has still existed. At this point of time, recalling the value of Kitsch could ignite true value of life. It is because Kitsch brings taste and desire of the public to mirror the spirit of this era.
Greenberg had been forced to separate artistic value of Avant-Garde from Kitsch generated from industrialization and the desire of people. The concept has been culturally divided into 'fine art' and 'mass art'. Socially, there is 'high art' for the elites and there is 'low art' for unenlightened public.
Firstly, this study would review Greenberg's essay, "Avant-Garde and Kitsch" and the background of the era to analyze conflictive relationships between two cultures. Secondly, by means of researching works of art which applied to dialectical interaction of Avant-Garde and Kitsch, cultural criticism can prove complementary relationships between two cultures which had been ignored by Greenberg. Lastly, this study vastly shows the value of Kitsch and 'mass art' to reveal a meaningful value in modern art which is communication between mankind regardless of education and social class.
As Kitsch was produced in the world of Avant-Garde, Avant-Garde also has used Kitsch to seek its own radicalization. 'Collage' of Cubism and 'ready-made' of Marcel Duchamp had been partially applied to daily necessities. Compared to those, Pop Art wholly had turned daily items into an art. Including daily life routines as an art, Pop Art had been given possibility of communication in the process of widening aesthetical experience for the public.
A dichotomous separation in the world of art may start in 18th century; its origin has reflected the preference of mental activity in Ancient Greek. In art history, the role of art generally has represented a sense of class consciousness.
Since ancient Mesopotamia, with development of cities and markets, 'mass art' has existed to strengthen joyfulness. One famous Russian magician describes art as to make people smile with the effort of one's sweat after performance. 'High art' demands a social gap between the
public, however, 'low art' can easily be penetrated into the public. This is the true value of 'mass art'.
In the shadow of modernism, the public has demanded a validity of sensible pleasures in modern society. Today, it is impossible to choose only one culture excluding other cultures. An eclectic approach has been dominate in the world of contemporary art. Thus, in the sense of novelty, the value of modern art has an active role to communicate
with the public.
With confrontations between Avant-Garde and Kitsch, they created their own values and it has brought mutual values to reflect each other and translate into new meanings. In the process of criticizing the structural differentiation of these two cultures, dignity and vulgarity cannot precede each other, but can be just categorized as a characteristic of humans. Furthermore, a harmonized life can be accomplished to soften entire boundaries of humane values.
