The purpose of this paper is to discuss the issue of ‘vision’ in the visual representation in contemporary arts centering on the formation of visual subject. A person may become a subject in a visual representation by perceiving an external subject and recognizing it in a visual form. Through such visual and perceptual acts, the relationship between subject and object are reestablished. Visual acts influenced the art, and the symbolic subject of traditional painterly representation was altered to the virtual subject of digital images today. This is an implication that the visual subject that observes the represented images changes as the visual media changes. Therefore, the concept of representation in contemporary arts need a new interpretation according to the changing subject. The ‘mirror stage’ and the ‘split between the eye and the gaze’ by Jacques Lacan illustrated that formation of subject existed on a visual level. Traditionally, ‘vision’ assumes the subjet of autonomous consciousness is integrated to Descartes’ cogito at the center of field of vision and focuses to disclose the visual experience in the viewpoint of the subject of consciousness. For a long time, this approach had a dominant influence over the domains of theory and practice in vision and was accepted as an absolute subject. Such field of vision was structuralized in the fifteenth century by perspective and geometrically rationalized using images of horizons and vanishing points. However, perspective forms a subject defined in the same empty format as Descartes’ cogito. It demands that the vanishing points made by the painter correspond with the eyes of spectators and reduces human eyes to a fixed point and then that point to an empty vanishing point. The perspective influenced the visual composition of painting. Traditionally, a painting existed by representing something and as the spectators perceived its significance, the representative painting included the ontology of significance. However, with the development of technology, visual media brought a change to the visual system. Photography made it impossible to measure the distance between the subject and object, and the camera disclosed both relativity and liquidity of point of view and, at the same time, expanded the world of visibility, downgrading human eyes and for human eyes to be dependent on machines. Especially, the digital images created by a computer are viewed by a type of vision difference from that based on perspective and are not traces of the actual objects. Thus, they do not have a technically direct relation to the actual reality. In other words, because a digital image is made by algorithms, they can be broken down and reorganized and manipulated in other ways. Therefore, a digital image is a world of simulacra that is broken away from reality and the constraint to representation. Also, it can be dynamically observed from a digital image how the subject in the image can vary depending on the background and how it changes about the axis of space and time. Consequently, advancement in technology led to subversion of the status of one fixed vanishing point, the subject of perspective. Unlike the norms of modernism based on ideology, under the dichotomous structure of the signifier and the signified, the simulacra in the time of technical reproduction only exists in the signified, based on the subject of one fixed point and loss of interiority and signifies permanent slipping of the signifier and the signified. The split subject is able to directly view the object as the linguistic media crumbles and becomes depressed as it perceives the candid bottom, falling to the abyss of disillusionment. However, paradoxically, the subject that had a taste of melancholy blank faces the truth. Alain Badiou referred to this event as ‘truth procedures’. An ‘event’ is the whole of possibility that must establish itself away from stereotypes and philosophy and art are its cognitions. ‘Cognition’ does not start from a previous premise but by a new method. In other words, it is a continuous process. Therefore, cognition is not an action to a fixed concept of signification but an act of ‘creation ex-nihilo’ produced by an empty space. Ultimately, creation ex-nihilo may be referred to as ‘cognition without an image’ free from the image of new cognition or the image constraining and suppressing the cognition. An art is not a representation of the world but an appearance of empty space, and an artist pursues to free the objects affiliated to his world from the mythology of the time. In the end, digital images are an ongoing progress of contemporary art and a principal moving towards the truth of changes in digital media. This is different from the previous physical and static art form. It is a truth in the immaterial and liquid art and produces concept and characteristics of empty, melancholy and sublimate visual representations.
