The study was conducted to examine the application of Montessori programs at state-licensed child care centers, which adopt the standard early childhood education curriculum and the child care center evaluation system. The centers surveyed for the study include state-run centers, private centers and home schools. A total of 120 teachers in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province answered questions for the survey. Cronbach's reliability coefficient for the questionnaire is .732. Chi-square test was used to assess differences between groups by using the statistical program SPSS ver 18.0. The purpose of this study is to look at teachers of child care centers that run Montessori programs; the state of Montessori child care centers and condition of their classrooms. Followings are the results of the study. First, in the teacher category, the result was statistically significant. In detail, the teachers' interest to the Montessori programs was generated by the need to conduct the programs required at the place of their employment. The majority of answers to the question regarding the number of teachers with Montessori programs certificates per childcare center were "two teachers or under." The years of serving at Montessori child care center were "five years or under." The majority of them receive training and education to upgrade their knowledge about the program "when they feel the need to receive education." It remained high that the training is regularly conducted by a headmaster. Second, how Montessori programs are run at childcare centers also showed statistically significant results. Montessori programs were frequently conducted during free activity time (in the morning) because it was considered to be the most effective time for children to maximize educational benefits from the program. Most attributed difficulty of accompanying Montessori programs with the standard early childhood education curriculum to the national child care center evaluation method, which does not offer credit to the program in the evaluation process. When Montessori programs are conducted with the standard curriculum, it turns out that the programs are partially integrated to the standard curriculum according to a child's age. The result is of statistically significant. Moreover, as to ways of applying Montessori programs, results didn't show statistical significance. However, majority of answers showed that there should be continuous effort to develop and apply Montessori programs customized to different needs at childcare centers. The majority of hours spent for the program were "30 minutes or under," which was not statistically significant. The groups participating in Montessori programs usually consisted of children categorized as one group in a childcare center. The Montessori programs were conducted regularly, which was statistically significant. Third, answers to the question regarding classroom environment showed statistically significant results. Childcare centers had programs that suit different circumstances of each center. Most of them prepared materials suitable for different stages of development and ages of children. The centers said they were short of materials in curriculum areas such as language and culture.
