This paper assesses forms of representation in the love affair narrative on the materialist basis of the modern and postmodern. By the love affair, it means the impossibility of love. Only when is love settled down the institution called marriage, it becomes approved as normal, in other words. Even though the illicit love affair motif has hitherto been used quite often in literature however, the love affair narrative has been discussed in the context of judging its value as vulgar and immoral. Of the value judgements, condemnation directed to a woman's love affair, especially to that of a married one has been even harsher. This is what comes to be focused on, and therefore to be selected as the subject of research. Hence, while thinking of literature as the contention between dominant and resistant ideology, this work searches for a place in which love outside the institution can be grasped through institutional dispositives that generate the love affair. Within such a context, forms of representing the love affair narrative are divided into two eras, the modern and postmodern. The modern era is set up from the late 1950s to the 1970s, during the latter of which the full-scale progress of Korean industrialization was on the right track. Modernization project carried out in the era reduced people's identities to nation and state, so by the identity of the time came to mean the male identity. This was ‘phallocentrism’ in which modernization and patriarchal power was embedded. Under the gaze of this kind, love was codified as romantic one and combined with modern family institution, leading to home sweet home narrative of the middle class. The modern love affair narrative symbolizes a marriage without love and husband with violence, thereby defining wives as sufferers and intending to actualize romantic love outside marriage. It is the modern love affair narrative which is used to acquire and maintain moral illusion manipulated as a mechanism for justifying the affair. What can be drawn from the characteristics of the modern love affair narrative is that the punishment for a married woman going through an affair is also administered not through a male individual but in norms of the male community. The norms identify her as a prostitute, enhancing the male's exchange system by interpellating her as a mother rather than an immoral wife. Not only that, women masking their public personae as men also have their wishes to punish her in the way of spreading rumor, and as a result, she suffers from her sense of moral guilt. The postmodern era is examined by analyzing texts mainly after the 1990s. During the time, reflection on the previous era was urged and criticism over phallocentrism was provoked. In feminist discourse, the love affair narrative appears as the-search-for-the-self narrative, and romantic love is understood as wasting emotion and dependency. In this regard, the search for the self becomes articulated with the logic of progress (growth), and love also seeks to escape from romanticization in the mechanism of progress. Instead of prevising the emotional excess of romantic love, now love comes to have consumer rationality that intends to maximize profits by reducing emotional exhaustion. However, it does not mean the disappearing of desire for love but is the distancing through fear and alienation. The acceleration of postcapitalism places the consumer subject at the head, which gives rise to two remarkable phenomena. On the one hand, the male lacking spending power begins to be excluded from the male community, and the female, on the other, seeks to secure ethicality through a non-representational system, not through the moral illusion in the previous era. Despite their efforts however, the rupture of the male community is once again restructuralized, and love is represented as even more impossible. For the fact is not that insititutional borders have disappeared, but that they are restructuralized in new ways according to nationality, race, gender, age, etc. Love becomes a matter of survival, and represented as an image of collapse. But, a new possibility for love can emerge only from the chain reaction of collapses.
