With the development of computer and information & communication technology and the advent of smart devices, the pattern of exhibition has changed from one-way supply to visitors to visitor’s firsthand participation and mutual communication. In this vein, the usage of smart devices has been extended for the present. However, smart devices are only used as a simple medium of exhibition so far and application programs are provided with the pattern of information service. In order to overcome these constraints, the exhibition of ‘Dugeundugeun Art Museum’ was held in the Buk Seoul Museum of Art from March 5 to May 10, 2015. It was a real-time exhibition of visitor-created contents through art museum’s digital media, namely outside exhibition halls, using a Beacon-based smart device application program and it was the first exhibition of this kind in Korea. In other words, it was a novel attempt to provide visitors both roles of a user and a producer of contents simultaneously and its aim was to make visitors firsthand take part in exhibition with their own contents. In this regard, the purpose of this study was to examine the characteristic of smart device application programs which providing a novel experience to visitors via a case study on visitors, and then look into the effect of the characteristic of smart device application programs on visitation experience and re-visitation intention, thus finding out the usefulness of smart device application programs in future exhibitions and working out useful suggestions. For this, preceding studies were reviewed and a questionnaire survey of visitors was carried out. Study findings are as follows: First, regarding the current status of use experience of smart devices, a 98.5% of respondents had more than a smart device, and a 29.7% of them used it 2~4 hours per day and a 32.2% of them, 4~6 hours. Regarding the level of use ability, the middle level and above was a 57.9%, whereas the high level, a 28.2%. This finding seems to support the fact that personally owned smart device-utilized visitation to exhibitions is possible and can be generalized. Second, regarding the grand average distribution of study variables, in relation to: (1) the characteristic of smart device application programs, the score of mobility was 4.12 and it was followed by social connectivity 3.92, reachability 3.81, interactivity 3.76 and awareness 3.71 in order; (2) the characteristic of visitation experience, the score of usefulness was 3.95 and playfulness was 3.93; and (3) the score of re-visitation intention was 3.76. This finding seems to present the fact that smart device application programs can be helpfully used to achieve visitor’s aim of visitation and induce visitors to find out joyfulness while they taking part in exhibitions. In other words, the characteristic of smart device application programs had positive effect on the usefulness and playfulness of visitation experience, and the characteristic of mobility had most significant effect on them. In addition, the usefulness and playfulness of visitation experience had positive effect on re-visitation intention. Based on above study findings, the author worked out following implications and suggestions: First, visitors had a positive perception of smart device application programs in general. Therefore, it is necessary to work out a strategy to make the most of smart device application programs in exhibition programs in a variety of ways. Second, among the characteristics of smart device application programs, mobility had most significant effect on visitors. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out studies on the mobility of smart device application programs in the future. In addition, regarding the perception of situation, it is necessary to supplement functions that can satisfy visitor’s expectations. Third, visitors thought their smart device application program-utilized visitation experience was useful and joyful. Therefore, it is necessary to develop exhibition contents that maximize usefulness and joyfulness. Fourth, since people had more than a smart device, it is necessary to develop exhibitions which can make visitors actively utilize personally owned smart devices. As above, this study examined the effect of smart device application program characteristic-oriented visitation experience on re-visitation intention, thus confirming the possibility of utilizing smart device application programs that providing a participation-based novel experience to visitors and then providing useful information to future studies.
