Based on the fundamental data of Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, this cross-sectional survey research tried to investigate the association between Korean adults' dyslipidemia, vitamin D deficiency and depression, to lay the foundation for lowering depression prevalence rate and suicide rate, and to provide the fundamental material to establish Korea national mental health policy on the basis of hematologic indicators. From the 5th session data (years of 2010, 2011, and 2012) of Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, adults aged over 19 were extracted. Out of them, 16,015(male: 6,728, female: 9,287) adults excluding those with missing data and cancer patients were chosen as study subjects. According to gender, dyslipidemia and vitamin D deficiency were analyzed. SAS 9.2 version was applied to analyze frequency, percentage, X²-test, t-test, and multiple regression. For the analysis on the association between dyslipidemia, vitamin D deficiency and depression, odds ratio and 95% confidence interval (CI) of the odds ratio were calculated. The results are presented as follows: 1. There were differences in general characteristics, living habitual characteristics, dyslipidemia, vitamin D figure and deficiency, and depression according to gender. 2. Regarding the general characteristics according to depression of female and male adults, both male and female adults answering that they felt menlancholy had high average years of age, a high rate of the education of less than high school, a high no-spouse rate, and a high rate of the incomes in the low 25% bracket. The more they smoked and drank, the higher their sense of menlancholy was. Regarding the average size of the waist, male adults had no difference, but female adults feeling menlancholy had a higher average size of the waist. According to depression, male and female adults showed somewhat difference. In other words, male adults suffering depression had a lower education level, no spouse, and belonged to a group with low incomes; female adults with depression had high average years of age, a low level of education, and much smoking and drinking. With regard to suicidal idea, both male and female adults who had suicidal idea had high average years of age, a high rate of the education of less than high school, a high no-spouse rate, and a high rate of the incomes in the low 25% bracket. The more they smoked, the more they thought about suicide. Male adults answering that they had no suicidal idea had a high rate of living in urban areas and physical activity with more than a moderate degree. Female adults answered that they had suicidal idea had much drinking, physical activity with more than a moderate degree, a high BMI, and a high size of the waist. 3. Regarding dyslipidemia and vitamin D deficiency according to depression of male and female adults, male adults feeling depression had no difference, and female adults who had dyslipidemia, high total cholesterol, high triglyceride, and high LDL-cholesterol felt menlancholy. Male adults who had dyslipidemia, high total cholesterol, high triglyceride, and high LDL-cholesterol, and female adults who had dyslipidemia, high total cholesterol were found to have depression. With regard to suicidal idea, both male and female adults who had dyslipidemia, high total cholesterol, and high LDL-cholesterol were found to think about suicide. 4. Female adults who had at least one abnormal figures of dyslipidemia as the result from multiple regression analysis to correct general characteristics, dyslipidemia, and vitamin D deficiency, and who had high total cholesterol and high LDL-cholesterol felt more menlancholy than female adults who had no dyslipidemia. Male adults who had at least one abnormal figures of dyslipidemia and who had high total cholesterol, high triglyceride, and high LDL-cholesterol suffered more depression that male adults who had no dyslipidemia. Male adults who had at least one abnormal figures of dyslipidemia and who had high LDL-cholesterol thought about suicide more than male adults who had no dyslipidemia. For both male and female adults, vitamin D deficiency was found to have no relationship with depression. In conclusion, there were differences in general characteristics and dyslipidemia according to depression of male and female adults; dyslipidemia of male adults was related to their depression and suicidal idea; dyslipidemia of female adults had association with their menlancholy. However, vitamin D deficiency had no association with menlancholy, suicidal idea, and depression of male and female adults. Given the study results, nursing intervention to help to keep dyslipidemia in a normal range can serve as a way of preventing depression of Korean adults. And the study result that depression related characteristics and types of relevant dyslipidemia were different according to gender indicates that nursing intervention methods should be applied differently according to gender.
