Purpose : Rapid and stable fixation of dental implants in bone is crucial for successful treatment. Recently, ultraviolet (UV) treatment has been found to enhance bone-to-implant contact by changing the biochemical properties of titanium implant surfaces. Herein, we examined whether the simultaneous treatment of titanium implants with UV and alendronate (ALN) synergistically improved the bone-to-implant contact. Materials and Methods : Implants were divided into 3 experimental groups (ALN-soaked, UV treated, or both ALN and UV treated) and the non-treated control group. Implants transplanted into the proximal tibia of rabbits. At 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks post-operation, bone formation at the bone-implant interface was evaluated by micro-computed tomography and histological analysis. Results : The experimental groups at all time periods showed greater peri-implant bone formation than the control group. At 8 weeks post-implantation, implants treated with both ALN and UV showed significantly higher bone formation than the ALN alone or the UV-treated alone specimens (p < 0.05). Conclusions : Ultraviolet treatment on titanium surfaces may stimulate osteoblastic differentiation and mineralization in vitro and, with ALN, may synergistically enhance bone formation at the bone-implant interface in vivo. Ultraviolet treatment combined with ALN may improve dental implant fixation and promote osseointegration.
