The objective of this study was to examine the vocabulary ability of infants in the age between 10 months old, the period of one-word vocabulary development, and 21 months, the period of vocabulary expansion, along with infant-teacher interaction in infant nursery facilities. In addition, the this study was also intended to look into difference between joint attention, the nonlinguistic communication of infant, and vocabulary ability which represented linguistic communication Specific subjects for inquiry are as follows. 1. What is the quality of infant-teacher interaction? 1-1. What is overall tendency of infant-teacher interaction? 1-2. What difference does exist in the quality of infant-teacher interaction, depending on teacher background variables(age, education level, teachers' experience/career, infant class teachers' experience/career)? 2. What is the level of vocabulary ability of infants aged 10 to 21 months? 2-1. What difference does exist in vocabulary ability of infants aged 10 to 21 months? 2-2. What difference does exist in vocabulary ability between infants aged 10 to 16 months and infants aged 17 to 21 months? 3. What difference does exist in joint attention and vocabulary ability, depending on quality of infant-teacher interaction? 3-1. What difference does exist in infant joint attention, depending on quality of infant-teacher interaction? 3-2. What difference does exist in infant vocabulary ability, depending on quality of infant-teacher interaction? The subjects of this study were 157 teachers and 298 infants at 63 day care centers in J City, G City, and I City in Jeollabuk-do. The research tools used in this study included the infant-teacher interaction quality evaluation criteria, infant joint attention measuring tool, and infant vocabulary ability checklist. The data collected in this study were processed to estimate the frequency and percentage by using SPSS 18.0 program to examine general backgrounds of subjects. To verify the quality of infant-teacher interaction, descriptive statistical analysis and F(t) test were conducted. Scheffe test was performed as post-test. Moreover, descriptive statistical analysis and t-test were carried out to validate the type of joint attention. In order to substantiate infant vocabulary ability, the frequency analysis was conducted of overall scores on the quality of infant-teacher interaction to select 25 teachers in the upper group and another 25 groups in lower groups, followed by selection of 52 infants whom those selected teachers took care of. The difference in joint attention and vocabulary ability between the selected upper group and lower group was analyzed, along with t-test. The results of this study are as follows: First, the quality of infant-teacher interaction was found to be high among infants who were 10 to 21 months old. The interaction had higher quality as the age, education level, teacher's career, and infant class teacher's experience were higher. Second, the number of comprehensive vocabulary was about twice as many as that of expressive vocabulary in infants who were 10 to 21 months old, regarding vocabulary ability. Moreover, the increase in the number of expressive vocabulary was noticeable, compared to the number of comprehensive vocabulary, as the monthly age increased. Third, both comprehensive vocabulary and expressive vocabulary were found to be higher in infants who were 17 to 21 months old than in infants who were 10 to 16 months old, as well as vocabulary ability by specific items, in connection with difference in vocabulary ability among infants who were 17 to 21 months old and infants who were 10 to 16 months old. Fourth, supportive joint attention was found to be the most common, followed by coordinated joint attention, attention to things, noninvolvement, attention to people, and attitude of standing by and watching, when the quality of infant-teacher interaction was high in relation to the joint attention of infants who were 10 to 21 months. When the quality of infant-teacher interaction was low, the supportive joint attention was found to be the most common, followed by attention to things, attitude of standing by and watching, coordinated joint attention, noninvolvement, and attention to people. Fifth, both comprehensive vocabulary and expressive vocabulary were found to be high when the quality of infant-teacher interaction was high, compared to the case of low quality of infant-teacher interaction, among interaction between infants who were 10 to 21 months old and teachers, in connection with vocabulary ability of infant. In conclusion, the comprehensive vocabulary ability of infant period was found to be far higher than expressive vocabulary ability when the monthly age was lower. For the joint attention of intention, supportive joint attention was provided a lot as the process of coordinated joint attention when the quality of infant-teacher interaction was high. When the quality of infant-teacher interaction was low, there was a lack of desirable interaction in which the supportive joint attention would otherwise lead to coordinated joint attention. In relation to the vocabulary ability of infant, both expressive vocabulary and comprehensive vocabulary were both high among infants of teachers in case of high quality of infant-teacher interaction. In other words high quality interaction of teacher played an important role in stimulating joint attention, the nonlinguistic communication of infant, and vocabulary ability which represents linguistic communication. Aforesaid results of this study will provide basis for developing programs that can improve quality of infant-teacher interaction while promoting effective communication of infant with others.
