The purpose of this study is to develop a cathartic group bibliotherapy program for middle-aged men, to analyze the individual experiences and internal sufferings of the subjects, and to observe the extent to which the treatment has been efficacious in altering the subjects’ perceptions of the meaning of life. The effectiveness of the group bibliotherapy program was tested and verified by qualitative research based on the Giorgi Phenomenological Method, and quantitative research based on statistical analysis of self-esteem and happiness factors. In this study, the targeted sampling was composed of six middle-aged men between the ages of 40-60 during the period July 1, 2014 to September 30, 2014. During this period, twelve regular sessions and one special session for inner healing were conducted. Questions for research: 1) How did the group bibliotherapy program analyze the individual experiences and sufferings of the subjects, and how did it alter the subjects’ perceptions of the meaning of life? 2) What was the group bibliotherapy program’s effect on the subjects’self-esteems and happiness? The major findings of the research: Individual responses of the six subjects accumulated through the program were recorded and compared. Through Giorgi’s Method of phenomenological analysis, responses sharing similar characteristics were systematically compiled into 197 smaller sub-components. The process was repeated until such units were reduced into twenty-eight components, which in turn, were classified into three, distinct ‘categories’. The first category, which involves the discovery and understanding of internal sufferings of the subjects, consists of five components derived from twenty-one sub-components. The five components entail internal sufferings due to: 1) personal psychological and emotional issues, 2) original family conflict (dysfunctional family relationships), 3) conflict arising between siblings, 4) interpersonal (social) conflict, and 5) nuclear family conflict involving filial relationships. It is important to note, however, that component two (original family conflict), is shown to have the greatest effect on the internal sufferings of middle aged men as subjects seem to display greater symptoms of the Oedipus Complex, a condition known as the cause of all neuroses (prevalent in dysfunctional families), than the average populace. The second category composes of the salutary effects of bibliotherapy. It is made up of two components and four sub-components. The components include the subjects’experiences from: 1) participating in the bibliotherapy program and 2) reading the books used as mediums for internal healing. During the program, subjects were given books to read and encouraged engage in group discussions to share their emotions and feelings. While the experience was rather new and unfamiliar for the subjects, the open-minded and positive environment and specialized group activities were able to encourage dynamic interaction between the subjects and create an overall catharsis. The final category is made up of one component and four sub-components. It measures the attitude changes of the subjects in their post-bibliotherapy lives. The components entail: 1) the subjects’personal attitude changes, 2) the subjects’changes in attitude regarding their original family, 3) the subjects’changes in attitude regarding their nuclear family, and 4) the subjects’plans on resolving future conflict. During the program, the participants were able to learn sources of their conflict with their original family while gaining insight on understanding their internal sufferings to an extent. Furthermore, the participants discovered the internal pains of their spouses through the experience, contributing to resolving of conflict and a pledge to create an overall more stable relationship. The participants also learned the value of good parenting and a stable and safe household for children’s mental and physical growth. The quantitative results has shown much promise in bibliotherapy. During the program, the participants improved in almost all areas of sub-factors, with a significant difference in average of pre/post bibliotherapy scores at p< .05. The only area that had no significant improvement was the ‘leadership and popularity’ category. The pre/post test of overall happiness also showed an improvement in average score with 15.5 points. Excluding the ‘sole purpose of life’area, the scores had significant improvements with a difference of p< .05. In conclusion, the data gathered from qualitative research has proven bibliotherapy’s effectiveness in remedying the negative phenomenological experiences of middle-aged men. By mediating through presentation and deliberation of meaningful books, the group bibliotherapy program was able to resolve conflict arising from inter-family relationships and promote an overall healthy self-esteem and happiness for participants.
