In this study, we focus on the educational value of fairy tales and aim to prepare a caring education method utilizing fairy tales to improve students’ ability to use caring language, develop caring attitudes, and inculcate caring behavior. First, although caring education so far has emphasized caring as an obligation, students are expected to exhibit care for others in their speech and behavior. Caring has consequently not become part of students’ daily life. This study therefore proposes a caring education method that involves specifically teaching students how to practice caring, and equips them to transform their existing behaviors to caring behaviors. Second, fairy tales allow students to experience various caring-related situations, and provide an opportunity to comprehend other people’s feelings by relating to the characters in fairy tales. This study aims to propose strategies and activities to use fairy tales in teaching and learning, in order to impart caring education that makes students realize the importance of caring as an everyday life practice, and apply it to their lives. The following describes the contents of the chapters in this study. In Chapter II, we investigated the concept of caring and caring education and its need as theoretical background. We then discussed the relationship between caring education and the characteristics of the Korean language as an academic subject, as well as the significance of caring education using fairy tales. In particular, we discussed the usefulness of caring education using fairy tales in Korean language education. In Chapter III, we discussed our review of the 2009 amended curriculum using which we identified the following as the principles of caring education: identification, understanding, influence, and implementation. We also presented the strategies and activities suited to each phase of the class model. Finally, in Chapter IV, we applied this method for teaching elementary school third-graders and analyzed the changes in their awareness, language use, behavior, and attitudes about caring. The implications of this study are as follows. First, by teaching a class with fairy tales, more practical education on care could be provided. Students could specifically understand situations that required care through fairy tales, and they could participate in class with more ease and interest by approaching the difficult and rigid concept of care through the contents of fairy tales. Second, students tended to willingly look for and read fairy tales about care on their own, and came to enjoy fairy tales more. Even after class, students continued to find and read fairy tales related to the topic, introduced them to other friends, and freely expressed, in their diaries and reading journals, their thoughts or behaviors after reading the fairy tales. Third, an aspect of a caring community emerged in class. Students paid much more attention when listening to their classmates giving presentations. In daily life, they also tended to express their views while managing to respect others’ opinions. They yielded to their friends more often in group activities, and more students encouraged their friends, instead of becoming angry or annoyed, when the latter made mistakes. Thus, it can be observed that education on care has changed students’ daily attitudes. Fourth, students came to realize the importance of the values of care by comparing it with other values. Instead of unilateral cramming of proper values into student’s head, they could select their own values of care and accept them while linking the behaviors of the characters in the fairy tales to the values of care and assessing them. This enabled internalization of care to be conducted more naturally. This study provided elementary school students with the experience to easily understand the concept of care through fairy tales and personally practice what they learned in daily life, thereby inducing change in speech, behaviors, and attitudes regarding care. Moreover, this study has significance in that it enabled students to select their own values of care by comparing with other values, and led them to enjoy reading related fairy tales.
