This study establishes a theory of rhetoric and its applications in order to overcome a crisis in churches, called “the absence of communication” caused by post-modernism. It suggests the theory of rhetoric as a tool for delivering truth of gospel effectively. In order to achieve the main purpose of the study, all contents, related with research purpose are explored and summarized and Aristotle’s rhetoric strategy is applied to analyze sermons. ChapterⅠand Ⅱ describe Aristotle’s rhetoric as a tool for overcoming a crisis, generated from post-modernism. This study introduces many words of rhetoric through historic overview of rhetoric for the purpose of promoting understandings. The main component of “communication” is discovered by comparing a general communication model with a rhetoric communication model. It is confirmed that the main components of the rhetoric communication is not only a tool of communication but also a tool of leading development via human relationship. In chapter Ⅲ, rhetoric communication is considered as an inevitable and necessary element in a sermon, in spite of many abusive examples of rhetoric such as a sophism or misuse for achieving ideology by Nazi. In the bible, it is also revealed that Jesus Christ and st. Paul use rhetoric in their own sermon. Moreover, in the history of Christianity, many eastern and western church’s preachers showed their outstanding ability on rhetoric. For example, there were Chrysostom in the eastern church and Augustine who made Christian rhetoric in the western church. Religion reformers who studied rhetoric were not good at speculative and artificial rhetoric and delivered their sermon in an easy way or straight forward. However, it is discovered that rhetoric has a great impact on sermon in terms of linguistic, addressing, analyzing Bible aspects and persuading audiences’ aspects. Chapter Ⅳ summarizes five rules of Aristotle’s rhetoric; Inventio, Dispositio, Elocutio, Memoria and Actio. Inventio connotes rediscovering and recycling basis of an argument, rather than inventing creative basis of an argument. Dispositio corresponds to draft. Elocutio is to make arguments into words. Memoria is a skill of memorizing contents which is delivered to audiences in an effective way. Lastly, Actio contains everything that helps directing arguments such as gesture, voice and accent. Chapter Ⅴ analyzes sermons which were delivered by pastor Sun Hee, Kwak, Sun Do, Kim and Sung Bong, Lee with three rules of rhetoric. Above mentioned, pastors are involved in a representative Korean religion bodies (Presbyterian church, Methodist church and Holiness church). Representative sermons (a general tendency of sermons and typical sermons) by the three religion bodies were sampled for analyzing sermons, followed by an intensive analysis of sermons by three pastors. As a result of analyzing, it is reveled that three pastors already use rhetoric, even by pastor Sung Bong, Lee who never learned rhetoric. In Chapter Ⅵ the limits of rhetoric in sermons were introduced with seven suggestions for development. One notable point is that rhetoric is casually human endeavor to alleviate problems. Although there has been long controversy about using of rhetoric in sermons among many experts, rhetoric might be considered as a compulsory element of communication and persuade are one of the most salient component in human society. In the point of view regarding emphasis upon the importance of Bible, rhetoric might be an imperfect way. However, it is true that for a long time rhetoric has been used as a tool for communication. Ultimately, it is an alternative method to overcome a crisis in churches. Even so, this study is limited as a research; because rhetoric is not originally designed for sermons. Firstly, out of five rules of Aristotle’s rhetoric, sermons are analyzed with three rules; Elocutio, Dispositio and Inventio without using Memoria and Actio. Secondly, the limits of this research are generated from the fact that the rules of Aristotle’s rhetoric are not originally designed for analyzing sermons. However, the study shows that rhetoric has tremendous impact on analyzing Bible text and persuading audience. Given that sermons owns God’s and human’s dimension, tasks for intact sermons also have two parts; one is for holy spirit and another is for preachers. Hence, rhetoric should not be considered as cure-all but as human endeavor, even with mentioned limits. Rhetoric cannot be dealt with problems arisen from order and awe but from embrace and awe. With this issue, Augustine separates the Lord’s part from and human’s part in reading Bible. Humans do their best to find and to convey truth and pray for the Lord at the same time. That is, human’s part is delivering truth with rhetoric and Lord’s part is changing human with delivered truth. Hence using rhetoric is inevitable in sermons. In the appendix, figures with representative sermons by famous preachers are analyzed in terms of rhetoric way in order to help understanding this study.
