본 연구는 비문해 농촌 여성노인이 어떠한 계기와 동기로 문해교육에 참여하게 되고, 문해교육 과정에서 경험하게 되는 것은 무엇이며, 문해교육이 삶에 가져온 변화는 무엇인지 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 현재 문해교육을 받고 있는 전라북도 H읍 농촌지역에 거주하고 있는 여성노인 다섯 명을 대상으로 포커스 그룹 인터뷰를 1회 실시하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 연구문제를 구체화하였다. 본 연구를 위해 현재 전라북도 도내에서 운영하는 ‘찾아가는 성인문해교실’ 고급반 문해교육에 참여한 전라북도 H읍 농촌 거주 여성노인 중 연구참여에 서면 동의한 여섯 명을 대상으로 2014년 8월 4일부터 9월 3일까지 1개월간 각각 3회기씩 개별적으로 면접하였으며 개인별 면담의 녹취자료를 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 연구에 참여한 75세에서 83세에 이르는 농촌 여성노인들은 비문해자로 살면서 배우려는 욕구가 있었으나 교육기회가 없었고, 생활이 바빠 엄두를 낼 수 없었으며, 이들이 문해교육에 참여하게 된 계기 및 동기로는 거주 지역 인근에 문해교실이 개설되어 자발적으로 혹은 이웃의 권유로 다니게 된 점과 배움에 대한 평생의 한을 풀기 위한 것 그리고 비문해자로서 일상생활의 불편을 해소하기 위해 그리고 문해자였던 남편과의 사별로 인해 자립능력이 필요해서였다. 농촌 여성노인들이 문해교육에 참여하면서 경험한 내용으로는 이전 문해교육이 단기 개설 후 폐쇄되는 교육기관의 한계와 뒤늦은 공부에 대한 남편의 반대로 인해 심리적 위축감을 크게 느꼈고, 주부생활, 생계로 인한 문해 기회 상실로 인해 너무 늦었다는 좌절감을 경험하기도 하였다. 그러나 이러한 부정적인 경험 속에서도 문해교육에 참여하면서 배움의 즐거움과 알아가는 기쁨에 크게 만족하고 있었다. 연구참여자인 농촌 여성노인이 문해교육에 참여하면서 변화된 삶은 크게 다섯 가지 영역에서 즉, 자기 인식에서의 변화와 가족관계에서의 변화, 그리고 대인관계의 변화, 일상생활에서의 변화, 노년기 생활 전망에서의 변화를 들 수 있다. 자기 인식에서는 ...

This research attempted to examine what momentum and motive made illiterate rural female seniors participate in literacy education, what they experienced in the process of literacy education, and what changes the literacy education brought to their life. To achieve this, focus group interviews were conducted on five female seniors living in the rural area of H Eup of Jeollabuk-do who are currently receiving literacy education, and based on this, the research questions were established. For this research, individual interviews were conducted on six persons who participated in advanced literacy education in “Mobile Adult Literacy Class” that are currently being operated within Jeollabuk-do and who consented in writing to participating in this research among the female seniors living in the rural area of H Eup of Jeollabuk-do for three sessions each for one month from August 4, 2014 to September 3, 2014, and the recorded data of the individual interviews were analyzed. The results of this research are summarized as follows. Those rural female seniors between the ages of 75 and 83 living as illiterate had wanted to learn but were too busy making a living to have opportunity to receive education, and as for the opportunity and motive for participating in the literacy education, the literacy class was opened near their residential area, so they came to attend the class voluntarily or with neighbor’s recommendation, to realize their lifelong wishes, to resolve inconvenience in life as illiterate, and to acquire independence ability after being bereaved of husband who had been illiterate As for what the rural female seniors experienced while they were participating in literacy education, they experienced the limitations of educational institutions in which short-term literacy education class was opened and closed shortly, and experienced lots of difficulties in receiving literacy education continuously because of their personal circumstances of husband’s opposition, support for parents-in-law, and economic activities to make a living. However, even in the midst of such negative experiences, they were greatly satisfied with the pleasure of learning and joy of knowing while they were participating in literacy education. Changes in life of the rural female seniors, who participated in this research, experienced while they were participating in literacy education can be divided roughly into four domains: changes in self-awareness, changes in family relationships and interpersonal relationships, changes in daily life, and changes in the prospects for life of old age. In self-awareness, self-identity and self-confidence were obtained, and in family relationships, support from husband, children, and grandchildren increased, and they were recognized in the relationships with relatives and neighbors. Their daily life became convenient and easy thanks to literacy, and they were satisfied with current life in old age, and came to have hopeful prospects for their old age dreaming of new hopes. Thus, it can be said that rural female seniors’ participation in literacy education have very positive effects on life in old age in diverse aspects. In conclusion, literacy education can be said to be a trigger experience to enhance the happiness and satisfaction of the rural female seniors’life in old age.
