Low-grade celadon wares, which were produced for local markets between the late 10th century and the early 11th century, differ somewhat from high-quality celadon. In general, most of the clay was used in the production process without any further purification. The colors of glaze are single or consist of a mixture of colors including brown, yellow, green, blue and there is a beauty of irregularity in their shape and color, accompanied by oxidation or signs of oxidation. In addition, they differ from high-quality celadon due to the use of coarse clay and simple models, show poor workmanship, and were not subjected to biscuit firing. So far, however, no effort has been made to identify it through a scientific approach. In this paper, we classified the low-grade celadon wares excavated from the Noksan dong Kiln Site in Busan according to the kiln sites, and selected a representative sample of thirty-five items. We then examined their visible, physical and chemical properties, compared them with the low-grade celadon objects from Haenam, Jeolla-do, and tried to summarize the contemporary characteristics of the materials and the production of low-grade celadon. Regarding the visible characteristics of the celadon objects collected from Noksan dong, they were made with gray clay that contains a lot of coarse minerals and is not dense. Their color is green, and a glaze aggregation phenomenon or incomplete glazing can be observed in some parts of the samples. Since traces of cracks at the inner bottom and the ground plane were observed, and no biscuit firing components were discovered, it is thought that the celadon items were piled up and fired without biscuit firing. The celadon objects are all of a similar color, regardless of the kiln from which they originated. The items from kilns 2 and 3 are brighter than those from kilns 4 and 5, and there are two saturations, gray and brown. The difference in the color of the clay is considered to have changed based on the firing conditions, such as oxidation and reduction. The brightness of the glaze is 54.36±7.35, and the saturation (a*,b*) is 4.13±3.31, 18.22±4.24, showing the high contribution of red and yellow. Reflectivity can be classified as the '一' type, as an "S" curve with high reflectivity of 550-620 nm, or as a falling curve where reflectivity decreases as the wavelength lengthens during reduction firing. Based on these factors, the firing condition of the celadon from Noksan dong is assessed as 71 % oxidation firing and 23 % reduction firing, and it appears to have been fired in an oxidation condition, which is characteristic of most low-grade celadon. The porosity appears to vary depending on the saturation of the clay. The average porosity per kiln is 8.8 % in the gray line and 16.1 % in the brown line. The results of the analysis of the principal components of the clay indicate that it contains 75.0±0.95 wt.% of SiO2, 17.1±0.86 wt.% of Al2O3, 2.04±0.76 wt.% of Fe2O3 and 0.51±0.04 wt.% of TiO2, which are coloring oxidants, and 4.4 wt.% range of the sum of fusing agents, regardless of the excavation sites. The celadon items from kilns 4 and 5, which were found to be darker in the measurement of brightness, have a slightly higher amount of coloring oxidants. The relationship between each piece of celadon was assessed on the basis of an analysis of the minor components and rare earth elements. The pieces from Noksan dong show similar patterns in the distribution of the elements, which enabled us to conclude that clay from the same country rock was used. From the results of the mineral analysis, quartz and mullite were detected in the celadon from Noksan dong, regardless of the kiln. In the analysis of the clay's principal components, mullite and feldspar were also detected in some items with a higher level of water absorption and porosity compared to others; their color was observed to be brown; and they showed a characteristically high L.O.I value. The results of the analysis of the principal components of the glaze indicate that the celadon from Noksan dong contains 56.9±1.79 wt.% of SiO2, 15.1±1.31 wt.% of Al2O3, 2.23±0.84 wt.% of Fe2O3 and 0.52±0.06 wt.% of TiO2, which are coloring oxides, and 23.7 wt.% range of the sum of fusing agents, regardless of the excavation sites, which appear to have used a similar glazing. There are notable differences in the physical properties - such as color, density, water absorption, and porosity - between the low-grade celadon items from Noksan dong and those from Haenam. The items from Noksan dong have a higher saturation value, lower density, and higher water absorption and porosity than those from Haenam. However, the principal composition of the clay is similar regardless of the excavation sites, but there is a difference in the content of the fusing agents and coloring oxides. There is also a difference in the principal components of the glaze used at the two sites, with the celadon from Noksan dong showing a lower level of SiO2 and a higher level of Al2O3. In conclusion, it was confirmed that the visible differences between the low-grade celadon objects from Busan and those from Haenam clearly originate from the differences in the components, the mixing process of the clay, and the poor firing technology.
