This is a qualitative case study of structuring a drama therapy program for school adaptation of adolescents with developmental disabilities, and thus to suggest the possibility of applying drama therapy to different circumstances. The participants were selected from those who wished to engage in the drama therapy program. They were 15 to 18 year old, had developmental disabilities, and were attending regular or special school at the time they engaged in the program. The therapy took place in the welfare center for disabled located in ‘S’, and other than the researcher of this study, there were one leader and one assistance to run the program smoothly. The therapy sessions were held 60 minutes per session, and once a week from February 27th to July 31st 2015, during which included 20 sessions in total. The focus of drama therapy program was on role theory and projection theory by Robert J. Landy. The goal of program was to increase participants’ social skills, and therefore to help their school adaptation. In order to observe the change in participants, videos and journals were recorded in each session. In addition, scales for self-elasticity and school adaptation were used before and after the program. As a result, the drama therapy program with improvisational theater, storytelling, video taping, and other techniques helped the participants experience group dynamics and feel accomplished. On the other hand, programs with drawing and drama needed individual assistance due to different capacities the participants had. Also, the participants resisted to engage in the programs and had difficulties understanding the direction given by the therapist. Some elements that affected the flow of program were stretching, providing visual materials using creative works, people who had hard time engaging in the group, and greetings at the beginning and at the end of sessions. Although the quantitative analysis did not show any significant difference, the qualitative evaluation showed positive changes in the participants. The present study demonstrates the possible application of drama therapy for school adaptation of adolescents with developmental disabilities. By using various techniques, the drama therapy helps adolescents to casually open up their stories. Unlike other studies based on quantitative analysis, this study is significant for providing qualitative analysis, and is expected to give practical guidance to those who wish to do further research on similar topics.
