The purpose of this study is to examine the Effects of group art therapy on emotional regulation in adolescents maladjusted to school. This author selected 16 second graders attending D Middle School located in K City who had difficulty in adjusting to school as subjects under their parents’ and their agreement on participating in this research, and they were arranged in an experimental group and a control group, eight for each group, randomly. Group art therapy was provided with total 12 sessions, twice a week, for 90 minutes in each session. To design the group art therapy program, this researcher modified and complemented Kim Hyeon-yeong(2012)’s art therapy program for emotional regulation properly for the purpose of this study referring to advanced research on emotional regulation(Gang Ji-hye, 2013; Choi Hyo-suk, 2012; Kim Seon-ryeon, 2015). About the measuring tools used in this study, to screen students maladjusted to school, this researcher employed the school adjustment scale developed and then modified and complemented by Kim Yong-rae(2000), and also, to figure out the level of their emotional regulation, the emotional regulation scale developed by Kim Gyeong-hui(1998) and then modified and complemented by Oh Ji-hye(2011) was utilized. The data collected went through the Independent t-test by using SPSS 20.0 to verify homogeneity, and also, to examine the experimental effects, the experimental group and the control group’s pre- and post-test scores on emotional regulation were analyzed by using Repeated Measures ANOVA. The findings gained in this study are as written below: First, group art therapy is effective on emotional regulation in adolescents maladjusted to school. Second, it exerts positive effects on the subfactors of emotional regulation in group art therapy (knowing and expressing their own feelings, emotional control and impulse control, using their own emotion, understanding and considering others’ feelings, interpersonal relationship). Based on the above study results, it can be concluded that group art therapy has positive effects on emotional regulation in adolescents maladjusted to school.
