Dental caries is not a disease that occurs by a single cause but is known to be a multifactorial disease that occurs from various reasons such as the environment, food, daily life habits, personal knowledge of oral cavity, behaviors, etc.
Especially for children whom are pre-schoolers, dental caries is being reported in many researches that the disease has much relations with the parent's knowledge of oral health and their behaviors.
Periodic checkups such as pre-schooler's dental screenings, surveys on the actual conditions of oral health in Korean citizens have been practiced in a national state point of view to decrease the occurrence of dental caries and increase the treatment effects by early findings. However, these practices were practiced only in a special age group and as surveying materials did not have any ties with the children targeted for the inspections and their guardians, relations with dental caries such as personal eating habits or behaviors and knowledge of oral health of parents and their behaviors, it has been an obstacle to realize the relations there are between behavior patterns and children whom have faced dental caries. Therefore, this research has the parents of the pre-schoolers targeted for surveys to acknowledge their knowledge of oral health and behaviors, sociology of population characteristics, behaviors regarding their children's oral health and relations with experience their children had when diagnosed with dental caries to provide basic data that can improve the pre-schooler's dental caries at the targeted researching region.
From January 15, 2015 to February 13, a total of 400 parents of pre-schoolers that attend 9 day care centers located in Siheung, Gyeonggido were randomly chosen for the self-report survey while 253 of these parents who had experiences in visiting a dentist during the last year with their children were actually analyzed. Questions of the survey used survey questions that were partly modified from the Korean citizen oral health investigating surveys that were held in 2012 and previous researches that regarded the oral health knowledge of parents and their behaviors. 17 questions were related with their children while 26 questions were related with the parent.
With the results, analysis was conducted whether the oral health knowledge of parents of pre-schoolers and behaviors regarding oral health had any relations in whether or not children received dental caries treatment.
By using the SAS 9.2 version, frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation and chi-square were (X2-test/Fisher's exact test) used to verify the results while the data went through multi-variate variable logistics regression analysis.
Research results were as below.
1) Dental caries experiences with the children in conformity with the sociology of population characteristics of the parent did not show significant differences statistically.
2) The overall level of oral health knowledge in parents did not show significant relations with the child's experiences in dental caries treatment.
3) Regarding oral health behaviors and comparing parents that use fluoride toothpaste and parents that do not use fluoride toothpaste, when parents do not use fluoride toothpaste, results showed that children had 3.83 odds ratio(95% CI: 1.38-10.64) chance in experiencing dental caries while when the parents have high numbers of tooth brushing in a day, their children had lower experiences of receiving dental caries treatment. Also, compared to groups where parents ate contain sugar snacks 0 to 1 time a day to a group that ate contain sugar snacks which contain sugar snacks 2 times a day, results showed that the parent group that ate contain sugar snacks twice a day had 2.52 odds ratio(95% CI: 1.15-5.52) that their children will experience dental caries treatment. After revising the variables of the parent's knowledge of oral health and sociology of population characteristics, parents that ate 2 contain sugar snacks a day had 2.78 odds ratio(95% CI: 1.21-6.39) that their children will experience dental caries treatment compared to parents that ate snacks 0 to 1 time a day.
4) In regards of the children's oral health behaviors, children that did not receive education on tooth brushing methods had 2.06 odds ratio (95% CI: 1.13-3.79) of experiencing dental caries treatment than children who have received the education. Also, children that use fluorine toothpaste showed 2.48 odds ratio(95% CI: 1.18-5.21) in experiencing dental caries treatment than children that does not use fluorine toothpaste. Children that eats more than 3 snacks a day showed to have 3.93 odds ratio(95% CI: 1.73-8.95) of experiencing dental caries treatment than children whom ate snacks 0-1 time a day.
Significant correlations were not founded between the oral health knowledge of pre-schooler parents and their children experiencing dental caries treatment but significant correlations were founded between the oral health behaviors of parents and their children experiencing dental caries treatment. When the parents's number of times in brushing their teeth increases per day, their children's experiences in dental caries treatment would decrease while when the parents intake snacks that contain sugar, it showed there would be increases in their children experiencing dental caries treatment. Therefore, relations between the parent's behaviors to oral health and their children's treatment of dental caries and ways to improve oral health will need continuous researches in the future.
