After the reunification of Northern and Southern Vietnam on 30th April, 1975, the official name of Vietnam became the “Socialist Republic of Vietnam.” The country had to face many negative post-war consequences, therefore, the government had to develop five-year plans as economic reformation plans for the country. Thanks to “Đoi Moi” (economic reform) in 1986, the economy of Vietnam recovered significantly fast in the 1990s with the annual average growth of 7 percent per year. From 1991 to 2000, Vietnam’s GDP doubled and the amount of exports tripled within only 10 years.
Along with the economic development, Vietnamese consumer behaviors also changed within a short period of time, leading to the development of the retail market. Since 2005, the retail market in Vietnam remained its constant growth rate of 20 to 30 percent per year. Vietnam joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2007 and officially opened its retail market in 2009. According to the pledges made when joining WTO, since January 2015, Vietnam has opened its retail market completely.
With the advantages of a large and young population, increasing wages, high consumption and the fast-paced ongoing urbanization, the retail market of Vietnam is being expected to continue to develop significantly in the future. Together with national businesses, multinational corporations are also making large-scale investments into this country, making it an even more competitive market.
After the normalization between Vietnam and South Korea in 1992, there have been good signs in the diplomatic relations between the two countries in many fields. In 2014, with 7,32 billion U.S. dollars invested in 684 investment projects, South Korea remained its position as the leading foreign investor in Vietnam. Since 2015, after the Free Trade Agreement between these two countries were signed, the trading between two countries has been expected to reach a higher level.
This thesis focuses on the analysis of the economy, society as well the development of the retail market in Vietnam during the past years. Besides, by analyzing the strategies to participate in the retail market in Vietnam of Lotte Mart, one of the first Korean retail corporations in Vietnam since 2008, the aim of this thesis is to bring about a general evaluation of the potentials of the retail market in Vietnam, in order to contribute to the support for other corporations to join this market in the future.
