This study was conducted to verify the effect of group play therapy program on executive function of underachievers. The case study includes 12 children of 3rd grade in M elementary school located in Seoul, who got higher score than 65 in KISE learning disability screening scale, and they rank below 25% within the class during consecutive 2 semesters. The 12 children were randomly divided into an experiment group of 6 children and a controlled group of 6 children. Total 12 periods of the group play therapy program have carried out twice per week, 60 minutes per period for the experiment group while nothing was conducted for the controlled group during the program period. After finalizing the program, the post inspection was conducted in the same way as the preliminary inspection comparing before and after to verify the effects of group play therapy program. The research tools used to measure the executive function level of underachievers are; the test tool of performance-measure (STROOP, CCTT-1, 2, backward digit-span test, fluency test, maze test) and the questionnaire of defects in executive function created by Park, Ju Ri and Song, Hyun Joo (2010) to enable elementary school student to rate the executive function defect in a self-reporting manner. Also, in order to measure the level of learning motivation, the learning motivation test was applied that Kim, Chang Hyun (2004) adjusted and modified the achievement motivation test of Herman (1970), internal and external control scale for students of Nowicki and Strikland (1973), test of ego effectiveness by Pintrich, De groot (1990), and Jeong, Taek Hee (1987), and the self-regulation ability criteria of Hong, Ki Chil (1994) according to the object of the study. The necessary data for preliminary and post inspection was analyzed by conducting Mann-Whiteny test and Wilcoxon test using the SPSS 18.0 statistics program. Also, each phase was analyzed using the video to check the emotional and behavioral change process of underachievers as a result of group play therapy program. Below is the summary of the results of this study. First, the group play therapy program resulted in overall behavioral change related to school life of underachievers and significant change in individual and social behavior which are sub factors. Second, the group play therapy program resulted in a significant difference in controllability of attentional control scale among the executive function of underachievers. Third, the group play therapy program significantly affected the fluency of information processing among the executive function of underachievers. Fourth, the group play therapy program brought a clear change in cognitive shifting ability of cognitive flexibility area of the executive function of underachievers. Fifth, the group play therapy program brought an obvious change in working memory of cognitive flexibility area of the executive function of underachievers. Sixth, the group play therapy program resulted in a noticeable change of planning and organizing abilities of goal setting area of the executive function of underachievers. Seventh, the group play therapy program also brought a significant difference in the actual influence level of executive function that appears in everyday life of underachievers. Eighth, the group play therapy program resulted in obvious change in self-efficacy among the learning motivation factors of underachievers. The significance this study suggests is as follows. First, this study has significance because it suggests applicability, validity and effectiveness as a program to mediate underachievers by proving that the group play therapy program is effective in behavioral change that is relevant to school life, improvement in individual and social behavior, improvement in executive function, and improvement in self-efficacy. Second, this study is meaningful for making up the low ecological validity of preceding studies by demonstrating the effect of group play therapy program even in everyday life of underachievers mainly using the preceding performance measure tools of executive function along with the questionnaire for children in self-reporting format. Third, this study proved the effect of group play therapy program utilizing existing resources in elementary schools. This has significance for setting the elementary school as a sample space that can boost mediation for underachievers.
