The purpose of this study is to understand the child-centered play therapy for children with ADHD based on Melanie Klein’s theory and to verify if the child-centered play therapy as a psychotherapy is effective for changing problem behaviors caused by emotional deficit of children with ADHD. The subjects for the inquiry are as follows. First, what change will come in child-centered play therapy for children with ADHD based on Melanie Klein's whole object and part object? Second, how is the behavior change in the children with ADHD according to child-centered play therapy? One five-year-old boy and two six-year-old boys were selected for the research participants among the children, who were diagnosed to have ADHD at a children's hospital and visited the researcher’s counseling center in the city of Gwangju to appeal that they had emotional and behavioral problems, after their mothers were informed of the purpose of the research and then the researcher got a written consent that the research on their children would be utilized from them. The period of the research was from April 3rd, 2014 to July 29th, 2015, and the child-centered play therapy was proceeded individually 38 times in total for Child A, 39 times for Child B, and 44 times for Child C once a week, 40 minutes per session. The play contents which appeared in the play therapy process of the children with ADHD were analyzed based on Melanie Klein’s theory of paranoid-schizoid position of a part object, and depressive position of a whole object. Also, an ADHD diagnostic test was used to compare the change in the pre/post test scores in order to analyze the change in the problem behaviors of the children with ADHD. The results can be summarized as follows. First, the process of the play therapy for children with ADHD repeatedly represented the features of Melanie Klein’s paranoid-schizoid position of part object, and building a secure relationship with the counsellor helped to move toward the progress of features of depressive position of whole object in the part object phase. The participants showed anxiety, projective identification and splitting to solve the problems of negative experiences in the paranoid-schizoid position, and aggressive behaviors frequently appeared due to depression and anxiety. Also, play scenes of fantasy by anxiety appeared in the children to maintain a stable emotional state, and they bespoke the feature of utilizing the object as a secure base while expressing projective identification and regression through the formation of a stable relationship with the counselor. In the depressive position, the children established overall internal objects along with the reward and ambivalence accompanied by the guilt of having made themselves projective identification with the therapist and the emergence of a new ego of totality. In the final stage of the therapy, the children showed a state of accepting and adapting to daily lives for themselves as a good object held place in their minds, and object relations at a part object level developed to the level of whole object. This represented a change from part object phase establishing the entire internal object in the heart of one's ego to whole object phase by obtaining a good internal object in a stable way through the relation with the therapist in the process of the child-centered play therapy for children with ADHD, in which they did not experience a secure attachment relationships from their mothers in the early stages in life. Second, the change of the problematic behaviors that appeared in the children with ADHD through the child-centered play therapy proved that the play therapy was effective in a change of ADHD children's behaviors by the post-test scores being lower than the pre-test ones in the ADHD diagnostic test. These results suggest that the child-centered play therapy helps children with ADHD overcome paranoid-schizoid position of part object and form totality in depressive position of whole object, and it leads to the conclusion that the therapy is an appropriate treatment for resolving the problems of the symptoms of ADHD by helping the children with psychological and emotional recovery and that this therapy can establish a good internal object which was obtained from the relationship with the therapist through supportive care. In this respect, the significance of this study is as follows. First, it is significant that the study provides a preliminary data analyzing the child-centered play therapy process for children with ADHD into the phase of the change of part object and whole object based on Melanie Klein’s paranoid-schizoid position of a part object, and depressive position of a whole object theory. Second, this study has significance as it verified the child-centered play therapy was an effective method to solve problematic behaviors of children with ADHD.
