Ph. D. Thesis A phenomenological inquiry about a transition of an art therapist from an art teacher Hye-Joo Son Department of Art Therapy Graduate School, Yeungnam University (Supervised by professor Sun-Nam Choi, Wae-Sun Choi) Abstract Art therapy has been developed rapidly based on art and psychology. And the methods and practice of art therapy as well as research on art therapists also have been actively researched. In art, experiences in human life are selected, diversified, and repeated. Experiences of art therapists can become the core of art therapy he or she provides. Therefore, this study attempted to examine experiences of art therapists as the most important tool of art therapy. Subjects in this study have studied art and pursued a career as an art educator rather than an artist. They want to communicate with people through art. They are interested in helping people realize the value of art and share it. Art therapy has been developed by absorbing social changes related to art, education, and psychology. Experiences and development of an individual can become a system in itself. Therefore, researching experience of transition from art educator to art therapy perhaps corresponds to understanding the background and history of art therapy. By applying the phenomenological method of van Manen, I tried to understand the essence of experiences of art therapists as an art educator. Data in this study were largely collected by experience inquiry of the author and experience statement of the subjects. In this study, six subjects who have six years or more of experience in art education and three years or more clinical experience as an art therapist participated. The data were collected between October 2014 and January 2015, based on three to four in-depth interview. And, the essential topic of study was established based on phenomenological and hermeneutical reflection of the data collected by using phenomenological hermeneutics. In the result, four essential topics, nine sub-topics, and 25 semantic units were identified. The essential topics related to transition experience from art educator to art therapist were: “encounter with art,” “fence of art education”,“new challenge”, and “beautiful flight.” First, the subjects remembered encountering art with curiosity and joy. They have consistently felt the power of art from their past experiences and felt happy about the pure art they experienced in childhood. Later, art motivated them to explore and reflect on their self-identity through rewards like praise and prize. Second, the subjects chose to major in art based on the positive art experience. They lost joy of art and went through transition that was not enjoyable, because of competition, for instance, while majoring in art. And then, they developed a desire to fulfill something beyond art. In the transitional process, the subjects pursued something more than a personal goal. Third, while working as an art teacher, the subjects experienced confusion related to their values for art and relationship with others and society, as the system focused more on the result than process. These experiences were combined with their desire for personal growth and led to a solution. And this suggests that they decided to become an art therapist with the hopes for art therapy. Fourth, the subjects experienced confusion while working as both art teacher and art therapy. They felt confused with their self-identity when they experienced something in art therapy that was similar to their experience in art education. Nevertheless, they remain enthusiastic about art therapy and want to remain an art therapist. This suggests that they hope they made a right choice for the transition. Fifth, the subjects remembered they began to study art therapy with the joy and excitement that was similar to what they felt when starting art as a child, and develop hope and expectation like they found an exit from the confusion they experienced. Also, the subjects were going through mature experience while providing art therapy that helped them view themselves from an objective viewpoint. As a result, they want to become a more meaningful person, while objectively looking at themselves and growing beyond their personal limits. Sixth, the subjects, after overcoming the confusion, became an art therapist and came to fight against their own conflicts. They sometimes questioned their choice and self-identity and reflected on what being an art therapist means. They recovered their identity and confidence as a therapist by conducting art therapy and talking to and being supervised by other therapists. The subjects found hope for art in art therapy, as they recovered their essence that was once lost during the growth process. They had motivation and expectation for art therapy that places value on expressing one's actual self. They defined art therapy as a process to remind people of their imperfection and give them an objective perspective and an opportunity for their missions so that they can change themselves. The subjects considered the satisfaction, fulfilled relationship, and opportunity for self-exploration, which were obtained while working as a therapist, as benefits of being a therapist. This suggests that they experienced self-reflection and objective self-analysis by studying art therapy. The subjects were satisfied with their profession as a therapist and felt art therapy brought out their strong point and that it was the right choice. The satisfaction included expectation from the society as a result of improved perception toward therapists and integrity of art therapy that allowed them to use their artistic communication skills. In art education experience, the transition to art therapist leads individuals to obtain more mature objectivity. The subjects were developing themselves as a more matured person through art, education, and art therapy. Becoming an art therapist after experiencing art education is a process and completion of an individual's growth. Therefore, this study was meaningful as it showed meanings of experiences of art therapists, which are the most important tool in art therapy, and also personal growth of individuals that encompassed art, art education, and art therapy.
