The advance in scientific technology has fueled the changes of media environments, and massmedia-aided marketing is being replaced with networking-based social media marketing. This shift is even concurrent with another change in modern people's lifestyle, and producers and consumers are able to share contents and keep track of how things are received in real time without being restricted by time ad space. Indeed, there is a paradigm shift that everybody is able to produce and consume contents and share them with others. Such a paradigm shift exerts a huge influence on the music industry as well. It's possible to listen to music anywhere and at any time on music websites including Melon, Soribada or iTunes that distribute intangible sound sources, whereas there had just been a limited number of vehicles by which one could listen to music in the past, such as tangible CDs or tapes. And how people respond can be found in real time via social media like Facebook, Twitter or Youtube. Everybody can listen to a Korean singer's music or an American singer's music anywhere in our country or foreign countries and watch their music videos. The Korean wave initially started in Asia including China or Japan in the 1990s, and it's now possible to listen to the music of Korean singers in different countries in the world involving some European countries, South America and the Middle East, which contributes to the spread of the Korean wave. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to examine the transition of the overseas marketing strategies of Korean popular music agencies by time period and by country. As for marketing strategies by time period, performances through contracts with local promoters or agencies were a major means of promotion in the 1990s. In the early 2000s, a localization 1.0 strategy was implemented to develop and export localized contents. In the mid-2000s, a localization 2.0 strategy was executed by inviting foreign members and cooperating with local companies. Specifically, YouTube services were introduced in this period, and albums were replaced with sound sources, which facilitated the shifts of the methods of marketing and distribution, and then there were gradual changes in overseas expansion strategies as well. As a consequence, most Korean entertainment companies started to make use of social media for the purpose of marketing. In the late 2000s, social media marketing strategies became a norm along with the changes of digital environments expedited by more advanced scientific technology. Every entertainment company began to be equipped with a new media division or a contents development division. Since 2010, a localization 3.0 strategy has been implemented to make inroads into foreign countries through the joint development of contents with local companies and through technological export. Concerning marketing strategies by country, offline marketing efforts through collaboration with local companies were prevailing in Japan. In China, performances and export of broadcast programs were a major means of promotion in the 1990s. In the 2000s, contents were developed in cooperation with local companies, and business diversification strategies were adopted. In other Asian regions, social media marketing was rampant, and quality contents and technology were exported. In the United States, there was a successful case in 2012, which was Psy's Gangnam Style, but it's not yet easy to push into this market. Asian people were still the main target audience, and some agencies tried to enter the American market after finding their ways into South America or Europe. There are emerging markets in some European countries, South America and the Middle East. Though it's not been long to enter these market, they seem to be lucrative because there are various favorable factors for market development unlike Asia. Although the Korean wave is not yet noticeable in these areas, there is a gradual increase in demand for K-pop. So it's needed to approach these markets step by step after having a perfect understanding of their characteristics. Currently, it's still in the beginning stage, and simple promotion activities such as performance or autograph events are being held, but how to address the markets in collaboration with local companies will be explored in diverse ways. Thus, the Korean popular music agencies pushed ahead with similar yet different marketing strategies by time period and by country to extend their business abroad. Meanwhile, it's not possible to take a look at the changes of marketing strategies by time period or by country in lots of articles of the Korean wave. This study is of significance in that it put the changes of marketing strategies in order by time period and by country after analyzing various articles and newspapers and interviewing experts in depth. This study is expected to provide Korean popular music experts and researchers with useful information on overseas marketing strategies and to suggest some of the right directions for further overseas expansion of Korean popular music.
