This study aims to examine consumers’ awareness of health functional food, direct and indirect experience of its side effect, and ways to find information before purchase and consumption, in order to provide ways to establish the culture of safe purchase and consumption of health functional food. A survey was conducted on adults in their 20s~50s living in Seoul, who have purchased and consumed health functional food. Statistical analysis of the collected data was done through SPSS v.18.0. As for the usual perception of health functional food, majority of responses were positive(69.1%) and to the question whether they researched or checked information on functional raw materials or side effects before purchase, majority answered ‘no’(59.18%). Regarding the most considered factors in making a purchase, ‘effects of products’ (51%) was most common and was followed by ‘evaluation of people around them’(24%), ‘functional raw materials’(12.5%), and ‘side effects’(3.5%). Still, consumers make purchasing choices depending on expected effects of products and information from people around them, and they are passive in checking information on functional raw materials and side effects, all of which need improvement. To the question whether the respondents are aware of the health functional food section in the homepage of Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, where they can get official and accurate safety-related information, ‘yes’ took low rate (32.5%), and among those who are aware, ‘checking information before purchase’ took 46.2% and ‘don’t use information in purchase’ marked 29.2%, showing that the rate of actually using the information was low. The reason why the level of awareness of health functional food and the rate of actual use was low was not because few people get information on the internet. Regarding the source of information on precautions in consumption and side effects, ‘internet search’(67.9%) was the most common answer and as to the changes after direct and indirect experience of side effects, ‘purchase and consumption after internet search’ (56.7%) marked the highest. From now, the elderly citizens will widely use internet and smart phone to search information. If Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and companies operate facebook, twitter, blogs, applications, which are for the purpose to provide information, more efficiently, it is believed to help consumer-specific purchases and safe intake of health functional food.
