Lung cancer is an malignant tumor, the leading cause for cancer mortality. Lung cancer does not have symptoms and appropriate early diagnosis methods. Thus, when diagnosed, about 80% are found in the advanced stage. Therefore, this study was focused on the support and management the poor prognosis of lung cancer patients and was conducted to the symptoms experience, distress, and resilience of the patients receiving chemotherapy. Data were collected from the subjects recruited into 80 patients who agreed to participate in this study among the patients receiving chemotherapy after diagnosed with primary lung cancer in one hospital located in Gyeongsang Province. With respect to research tools, a memorial symptom assessment scale-short form(MSAS-SF) for symptoms experience, a distress thermometer (DT) and a distress list of issues (Problem List, PL)for distress, and a Korean version of Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 2 (K -CD- RISC 2) tool for resilience were used. Data were collected from August 10 to September 11, 2015. For data analysis, general characteristics and disease-related characteristics were calculated using the SPSS statistics 21.0 program. Distress and resilience levels were calculated based on frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. For symptoms experience, distress, and resilience Resilience in accordance with the general characteristics and disease-related characteristics, analysis of variance, including a t-test, ANOVA, etc, was used. For the post-test, the Scheffe's test was performed. For the correlation between key variables, Pearson's correlation coefficients were used. The results of this study found that all subjects had experienced psychological symptoms in symptoms experience and their psychological symptoms were more severe than their physical symptoms in the degree of suffering. Also, In addition, subjects complained of emotional problems the most in distress. For resilience of subjects. the level was relatively lower than breast cancer patients and disease groups, or survivors. As a result of analyzing symptoms experience, distress, and resilience according to the general characteristics and disease-related characteristics of participants, symptoms experience showed a statistically significant difference in the treatment period, stage, presence or absence of radiation therapy, chemotherapy administration route, chemotherapy treatment times, and performance for activity capacity (ECOG PS). Distress was found to show a statistically significant difference in the religion, diagnosis, stage, period, stage, presence or absence of radiation therapy, chemotherapy administration route, chemotherapy treatment times, chemotherapy administration route, chemotherapy treatment times, and performance for activity capacity (ECOG PS). For resilience, a statistically significant difference was found in age, gender, economic status, and smoking history. Symptoms experience and distress in subjects had a significant positive. Distress increased with symptoms getting more severe. However, symptoms experience, resilience, and distress showed no significant correlation. This study demonstrated that symptoms experience and distress have a significant positive correlation, suggesting the necessity of managing the assessment and management of symptoms and distress at the same time. In particular, an approach is needed to recognize that lung cancer patients suffer. In the future, it is necessary to develop and apply psychological support therapies and non-pharmacologic intervention programs. The relationship of resilience according to symptoms experience and distress was not identified in this study. However, it was demonstrated that resilience gives a direct impact on distress and is plays as an internal capacity to improve the quality of life. Thus, the proposed approach can be an approach useful to lung cancer patients. Based on the results of this study, studies need to be repeated to determine the relationship between symptoms and distress, which has not been investigated in this study. Furthermore, studies are needed to develop and apply nursing intervention programs in order to promote resilience by revealing the factors that affect the level of resilience.
