The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of situational role play oriented safety education on safety problem solving ability and self-regulation of young children and to find effective education. The following research problems were established to conduct this study.
The questions are as follows:
1. How is the influence of situational role play oriented safety education on safety problem solving ability of young children?
2. How is the influence of situational role play oriented safety education on self-regulation of young children?
The subjects in this study were 46 five-year-olds, at S kindergarten in G city. 23 children in one class became experimental group and 23 children in the other class became comparative group. situational role play oriented safety education related to daily living was applied to children in the experimental group, whereas a class involving safety discussion related to daily living was applied to the children in the comparative group. The study was conducted twice a week for a period of 8 weeks (16 classes).
As a test instrument, The safety problem solving ability Scale designed the researcher of this study revised/supplemented a research tool developed by Eun Bok Kwak based on Scott’s (1992) 「Preventing Injury; A Safety Curriculum」 to correspond to the objective of this study.
Also, in order to assess the self-regulation of the children, SCRS (Self-Control Rating Scale) developed by Kendall and Wilcox (1979), translated by Hye Jeong Yu (1998), and revised by Ji Hyun Lee (2001), was used.
The data collected through a preliminary evaluation and follow-up evaluation were analyzed through a covariate analysis (ANCOVA) using SPSS 21.0 statistics program.
The results of study were as follows:
First, as a result of a follow-up assessment of the experimental group to which a situational role play oriented safety education was applied and the comparative group to which a discussion on safety was applied, the children in the experimental group showed significantly higher statistics of safety problem solving ability. Also, the experimental group showed higher scores compared to the comparative group in areas of ‘playing safe’, ‘following traffic safety rules’, and ‘emergency response’, which are safety problem solving ability. This result suggests that the use of situational role play oriented safety education has positive enhancement effects for safety problem solving ability in children.
Secondly, as a result of a follow-up assessment of the experimental group to which situational role play oriented safety education was applied and the comparative group to which a discussion on safety was applied, the children in the experimental group showed significantly higher statistics of self-regulation. The experimental group showed higher scores in ‘self-control ability’ and ‘reduced impulsiveness’, which are subdomain categories of self-regulation. However, the experimental group and comparative group did not show a significant difference in the area of ‘cognitive concentration’. This result suggests that the use of situational role play oriented safety education has positive enhancement effects for self-regulation in children.
The results suggested that situational role play oriented safety education has positive influence on increasing both of csafety problem solving ability and self-regulation of young children. Therefore, the study indicates that the use of situational role play oriented safety education provides positive effects for the improvement of afety problem solving ability and self-refulation in children, it suggests that the integration of situational role play oriented safety education in the field of child education is valuable.
