Genre-based Analysis of Korean EFL High School Students’ Writing: Focusing on Metadiscourse and Move Use in Argumentative and Descriptive Writing원문보기
EFL(English as a Foreign Language)

This study examines the perception of EFL Korean high school students on genre and how it can affect genre-based English writings. Pre-questionaire was conducted as a first step to figure this out. Next, Hyland's metadiscourse classification is utilized to do a meaning analysis of two different genres. Swales’ move-steps model was needed for the analysis of argumentative writing while Moon(2015)’s model is used for descriptive writing for analyzing structures, respectively. Lastly, post-questionaire was used as the last step.
The participants consists of two groups, one of which goes to J girls’ high school and the other M boys’ high school. Each number of examinees is 72 and 58 respectively, totally amounting to 128. In the attempt to look at how the general tendency of high school students' English writing ability by genre will be, the first group wasn't divided according to the proficiency level. In contrast, The other group took part in writing self-introduction in English so that they can be assigned into each level; high level and low level. Other than that, participants follow the same procedures such as pre-questionnaire, argumentative writing, descriptive writing, and post-questionnaire.
The major results are as follows. First, both of the groups are mostly unaware of genre-based writing. When it comes to the use of metadiscourse, both group students from two schools employed different sub-categories among the classification of metadiscourse according to two different genres. Each two different argumentative and descriptive genre represented different sub-categories of metadiscourse as well. In argumentative writings, such metadiscourses as AM, LC, and FM were noticeable while descriptive writings showed that RM, PM, and EMP among metadiscourses were used a lot. In terms of the result of move, the students ,irrespective of the schools, marked higher record on the part of both arguing and explaining the reason for argumentative writing. In contrast, it was observed that they didn't follow the other necessary move-steps such as introducing an issue, counter-claiming, and refuting. In descriptive writing, students did quite well in the move of description while the other two moves such as topic introduction and ending and evaluation did not show the remarkable results. This is also true of the writings of each genre by two different level groups. In addition, it is worth mentioning that the higher the level is, the more and the more various kinds of metadiscourses were used in both genres. The result of move use also reveals the same pattern as above. That is, high-achieving students recorded higher points on average whereas those who are low-achieving were not good at it with no concern for any genre.
In conclusion, the proficiency level plays a significant role in making good use of metadiscourse and following move in each genre. Nevertheless, most of students do not even recognize what the genre-based writing is, resulting in relatively poorly-organized English writing quality. Therefore, systematic teaching and learning about genre-based writing should be introduced and practiced on the part of students and teachers alike so that they can do well in English writing of different kinds of genre.
