Human desire is reflected in novels. The objects of desire varies as there are desire of power, desire of love, desire of revenge and many others. And these various objects of desire provides a glimpse of the fierceness of humans. Maybe desire can be considered as an energy that makes humans take a step forward to achieve what they want. This desire has been studied by many scholars from a psychoanalytic viewpoint from the past.
Lacan explained the unconscious and desire of humans with the triad of the Imaginary Order, the Symbolic Order and the Real Order. The Imaginary Order is the related to the stage where babies believe the world works around themselves. This can be explained as the Mirror Stage. Babies perceive their bodies while looking at mirrors. At this moment, what they see in the mirrors can be either their own entire bodies or those of other grown-ups. When babies see grown-ups who take care of them in mirrors, they take the adults as themselves. This is called identification. Babies believe that they can accomplish all they desire. But there comes a time when they face the reality as growing up, and this stage is related to the Symbolic Order. Lacan considered fathers, laws and institutions of societies as the reality that humans are supposed to face. From this time on, humans realize that the world does not work in a way they hope. This want gives rise to desire and due to identification, humans desire the desire of the other. Once the desire is attained, humans desire another desire in the Real Order and returned to the Symbolic Order. It is the Real Order where desire impossible to fulfill is connected to as the Imaginary Order. In the Real Order, things that humans call “miracles” are accomplished. It is usually in the Real Order that humans face their limits in reality, that is to say, the Symbolic Order.
This study aims at analyzing 『Shower』 written by Jeong Ji-won based on Lacan’s Desire Theory. This Ma Hae-song prize awarded novel presents cockroaches that ordinary people hate as protagonists. Detested by humans, they are living their nighttime lives avoiding attacks from humans. But the novel 『Shower』is not a story about cockroaches, though it may seem to be. What it really deals with is human life. The female cockroach Aneuk (cozy) is being shunted aside by others due to its appearance different from theirs, while Bud (soft), a male cockroach who had loved by others for his superior looks but being shocked by the death of a cockroach, one day he left all behind and arrived to live a life locked inside a shower. When Aneuk thinks of killing herself, Bud appears and enters her life, and Bud, who has lived a life on the boundary between life and death, starts to dream of escaping again thanks to Aneuk. The cockroaches talking and thinking as human beings can be thinkable only in the Imaginary Order. But the lives of Aneuk and Bud resemble those of humans. Aneuk exerts a force in the face of her death through Bud, which can take place in the Real Order and succeeded to make Bud escape. Aneuk sacrifices herself for Bud and her desire led to death, the end of desire. Lacan said that humans desire the desire of the other. Aneuk desired the desire of Bud. His desire was to escape from the shower. Aneuk helps him escape and faced her death. She could not attract attention from others due to her appearance different from them, and it was the male cockroach Bud who was locked in the shower who paid attention to her. Warm attention and encouragement from other entity created a force that enables one to willingly accept sacrifice for the accomplishment of other subject's desire. Aneuk failed to reach her own desire. She even did not realize what she really wanted. She simply gave her everything to Bud who accepted her without showing any prejudice against her appearance unlike other cockroaches. When the Big Other became the Subject, Aneuk offered the love of sacrifice to Bud, which made it possible for him to escape from the shower―what he desired.
The ultimate goal of reading education is to help readers think in a multilateral way while reading. Novels can be analyzed in terms of character, incident, ideology and others. This study conducted a psychoanalytic analysis on the novel 『Shower』. Psychoanalysis deals with the human unconscious and requires a deep insight into the human inside. 『Shower』tells readers a story about appearances, discrimination and sacrifice, providing opportunities to readers to reflect on their true desires and to have a more mature view toward relationship with others by learning the meaning of love in aspect of its spiritual effect to others. The main readers of the novel range from elementary school higher graders to middle school students. It is recommendable for readers who have difficulties in relationships with others to read 『Shower』 from a new point of view and have time to think about themselves and others.
