The objective of this study was to identify the effects of in-between play activities on the study attitude and attention concentration capabilities of the elementary school students. The following research questions were established to achieve the study objectives. First, is there a difference in the elementary school students' study attitude after they performed in-between play activities? Second, is there a difference in the elementary school students' attention concentration capabilities after they performed in-between play activities? The objects of this study were divided into an experimental group and a control group. The sixth-grade students who were performing the in-between play activities in J Elementary School, located in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, were selected as the experimental group, and the six-graders in G Elementary School were selected as the control group, where the control group students were not performing the in-between play activities. A preliminary test of study attitude and attention concentration capability was performed for both groups in the first week of March when a new semester began. The experimental treatment was made using the example of in-between play, which was distributed by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. After ten weeks of experimental treatment, a posttest was conducted using the same questions given in the preliminary test, where it used the attention concentration capability test sheet suggested by the Korea Education Development Institute (1992) in the Development of Study Attitude Test Sheet and Lecture Attention Model (H. Park and K. Kang, 2001). The results of this study are as follows: First, the average difference in the scores between the preliminary and the posterior tests was 0.02 in the experimental group and 0.71 in the control group, which means that there was no statistical change (t=-1,4120, p>0.05). As shown above, no significant change in the study attitude in the preliminary and posterior tests was found both in the control group and the experimental group, in which the participants underwent in-between play activities. Thus, it was found that the in-between play activities do not have a significant impact on the elementary school students' study attitude. Second, the average attention concentration capability of the experimental group was 134.6 in the preliminary test, which was decreased to 132.07 in the posttest. The value slightly increased from 140.40 to 143.24 in the control group. The attention concentration capability measures between the two groups were found statistically insignificant (t=-2,8115, p<.01). Therefore, it was found that the in-between play activities impede the elementary school students' attention concentration capabilities. The findings suggest that the in-between play activities do not have a significant effect on the elementary students' study attitudes, and have a decreasing effect on the students' attention concentration capabilities. However, the results cannot be simply generalized to all of the elementary school students, and a succeeding research is suggested to make an investigation on the effects of the in-between play activities targeting a larger number of samples.
