The purpose of this study was to develop a sensory-play-based early childhood art education program and apply it to young children aged 3 years old in order to verify its effectiveness and verify its validity for application in classrooms for young children. To this end, research was conducted for program development, followed by another research for verifying the effectiveness of the program application. The postulated research questions of this study are as follows: 1. How can a sensory-play-based art education program for young children aged 3 years old be developed? 1-1. What are the goals and aims of the sensory-play-based art education program for young children aged 3 years old? 1-2. What are the organized contents of the sensory-play-based art education program for young children aged 3 years old? 1-3. How can teaching and learning methods of the sensory-play-based art education program for young children aged 3 years old? 1-4. What are the developed assessment methods of the sensory-play-based art education program for young children aged 3 years old? 2. What are the effects of the sensory-play-based art education program for young children aged 3 years old? 2-1. What are the effect of the program on young children's artistic expression abilities? 2-2. What are the effect of the program on young children's creativity? 2-3. What are the effect of the program on young children's playfulness? This study includes rhe development process of the program and analysis of its effects for research questions as below. The first research problem aimed to develop a sensory-play-based early childhood art education program. For this, previous studies on sensory play and early childhood art education were reviewed. Furthermore, actual classroom observation and teacher interviews were performed. The purpose of the program was to promote an understanding of aesthetic elements, improve creative expression abilities, and evoke interest in art in young children. The specific objectives included: “using the five senses, take interest in the materials and investigate”; “use the materials in a variety of ways and engage in creative play”; “gain an understanding of the aesthetic elements of the materials”; “take interest in the beauty of artwork and engage in creative artistic expressions”; and “participate in sensory play and enjoy the process of expressing with art.” The educational content of the program included a play utilizing the five senses, a play based on the different properties of materials; and aesthetic appreciation and expression. The teaching-learning method for the program consisted of the following: teaching-learning principles, teaching-learning process, teaching strategies, teacher's role, and teaching materials. The teaching-learning principles consisted of using familiar materials, integrating senses, creating a new play method, and engaging in aesthetic experience. The teaching-learning process consisted of engaging in sensory play, engaging in art activities, and evaluation and sharing. The teaching strategies consisted of providing a sensory experience, inducing a sensory investigation, demonstrating sensory play, encouraging artistic symbolism, demonstrating artistic expressions, and using aesthetic vocabulary. The roles assumed by the teacher were: sensory experience provider, creative play method constructor, sensory play participant, and encourager of aesthetic expressions. The teaching materials consisted of various sensory materials, kitchen utensils, household items, role play items and art tools, as follows: sea mustard, a pot scourer, a stone, jelly, glass beads, a leaf, powder, a flower, tofu, fruits, cereal, feathers and knitting wool. The program evaluation consisted of toddler evaluation, teacher evaluation, and program evaluation. Moreover, the following was appropriately used: formative evaluation, summative evaluation, plan evaluation, portfolio evaluation, and teacher journal evaluation. The second research problem aimed to determine the effects of the sensory-play-based early childhood art education program. The study participants were 36 young children aged 3 years old from two kindergartens in Seoul. They were grouped into the treatment group and the control group, with 18 young children in each group. Each group had 7 male young children and 11 female young children. The program was put into effect for 24 sessions in 12 weeks, from September 21, 2015 to December 11, 2015. Before the program was put into effect, a pre-evaluation was done on all of the young children. They were evaluated for their artistic expression abilities, creativity and playfulness. After the 12-week period, a post-evaluation was done using the same evaluation tools as before. Based on the data collected, an independent samples t-test was performed to find the differences between the two groups. The research findings on the effect of the program are as follows. First, the effects of the sensory-play-based early childhood art education program on artistic expression abilities in young children were examined. As a result, the treatment group showed a significant improvement over the control group in the total score of artistic expression abilities and in the sub-factors of artistic expression abilities, namely image expression, expression methods, and the use of materials and tools. Therefore, the program was found to have a positive effect on improving artistic expression abilities in young children. Second, the effects of the sensory-play-based early childhood art education program on creativity in young children were examined. As a result, the treatment group showed a significant improvement over the control group in the total score of creativity and in the sub-factors of creativity, namely fluency, originality, title abstractness, elaborateness, and resistance to abrupt termination. Therefore, the program was found to have a positive effect on improving creativity in young children. Third, the effects of the sensory-play-based early childhood art education program on playfulness in young children were examined. As a result, the treatment group showed a significant improvement over the control group in the total score of playfulness and in the sub-factors of playfulness, namely physical spontaneity, social spontaneity, cognitive spontaneity, expression of pleasure, and a sense of humor. Therefore, the program was found to have a positive effect on improving playfulness in young children. In conclusion, the sensor-play-based early childhood art education program was found to have a positive effect on artistic expression abilities, creativity, and playfulness in young children aged 3 years old. These findings indicate that the sensory-play-based early childhood art education program developed in this study is suitable for application in actual classrooms for young children aged 3 years old. It also highlights the value of the program, especially as one that is differentiated from the traditional art education.
