This study is a qualitative case study looking into structure and possible application of drama therapy program to adolescents with intellectual disability. These adolescents lack in social skills used to live in the society. This issue leads them to act in a way that is not accepted in the society, and thus to arouse negative reactions from their peers. The researcher conducted this study with five adolescents with intellectual disabilities who have social skill issues. The participants were 15 to 16 years old at the time of study, and all of them was enrolled in G middle school special class located in Gyeonggi-do. The drama therapy program was conducted 60 minutes per session, once a week from June 18th to October 1st 2015, during which included 15 sessions in total. In drama therapy sessions, the researcher engaged as a main therapist and wrote journals based on participant observation, pictures, and recordings. As a means of assistance, Korean Inventory of Peer Relationships questionnaire was used before and after the program. Case analysis through researcher’s observation and questionnaire evaluation were useful in looking into the possible application of drama therapy to adolescents with intellectual disability.
The drama therapy program was structured based on Robert Landy’s Role theory and Alida Gersie and Mooli Lahad’s Narrative model. The focus of program was on bringing positive change in peer relationships of intellectually disabled adolescents. As a result, the participants showed positive change in social interaction skills, and also showed increase in understanding themselves and others. Hence, drama therapy program designed to change peer relationship was found to be applicable to intellectually disabled adolescents.
The study has a significance for looking into possible application of drama therapy program, which has originally been narrowly used to disabled children and developmentally disabled, to disabled adolescents. The researcher proposes the further study to be done on the drama therapy so that intellectually disabled adolescents can receive more opportunity to join the program.
