There are many aesthetic criteria about appearance, but in recent years people’s interest in looks and fashion is shifting to the interest in skin care. In particular, as women’s special attention to appearance is shifting from artificial plastic beauty to natural skin beauty, their interest in beautiful skin is expanding. This study aims to examine why people receive skin care, and for what reasons they choose the skin care salon. Understanding the preferences of consumers is one of the top priorities in any business, and this study will be able to provide implications that may help the skin care salons in the environment of harsh competition to conduct proper management and operation activities according to consumer preferences. Especially, this study has the objective of finding out whether the consumers have unreasonable consumption behavior patterns in determining their skin care salon. The study combines literature review with empirical analysis in order to achieve the objectives. For theoretical discussions and advanced research, empirical analysis is used including literature review, surveys and analysis. In particular, a structured survey questionnaire was used targeting 1,000 women over the age of 20. For the sample, proportionate stratified sampling method was utilized for the generalization of the findings. For analysis, T-test, ANOVA, descriptive statistics analysis, frequency analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis were performed by utilizing SPSS v.19.0 Four hypotheses were set for the achievement of the research purpose.
Hypothesis 1. The demographic attributes (age, education, income, residence, etc.) will affect the skin care choices. Hypothesis 2. The type of skin care salon (medical skin care salon, general skin care salon) will affect the skin care choices. Hypothesis 3. Veblen effect will affect the skin care choices. Hypothesis 4. Bandwagon effect will affect the skin care choices.
For the hypothesis testing, the awareness between different groups were compared and analyzed and the analysis results showed that there were some differences in awareness between groups for some questions. It appeared that there was a difference of awareness among people according to age, residence and income, and there was a great difference between respondents who use medical skin care salon and those respondents who use regular skin care salon. These points have become the basis for the partly adoption of the hypothesis, ‘the skin care salon selection will be affected by the demographic attributes.’ And the hypothesis that ‘the type of skin care salon will affect the skin care choices.’ could also be adopted. In particular, the analysis showed that there appeared to be a relatively strong difference of awareness between groups in the main factors related to the Bandwagon effect. In the case of Veblen effect, the 'trend-oriented factor’ was analyzed to have a statistical significance. Second, it was verified that the behavior of unreasonable consumption greatly affects the patterns in the use of skin care salons. Regarding the intention of the use, all the main factors of Veblen effect and Bandwagon effect except for ‘advertizing and purchasing propensity factor’ turned out to have impact. For the intention of revisit, there were main factors such as 'trend-oriented factor’, 'tendency of agreeing to friend’s recommendation factor' and 'imitation tendency factor'. For the satisfaction level, there were main factors such as ‘brand-oriented factor', 'trend-oriented factor’, ‘imitation tendency factor’, and ‘purchase by advertisement factor.' For the recommendation intention, the analysis showed ‘personality-oriented factor’, ‘trend-oriented factor’, ‘imitation tendency factor’ and ‘tendency of following responses factor’ as main factors. Accordingly, It appeared that the research hypotheses of ‘Veblen effect will affect the skin care choices.’ and ‘Bandwagon effect will affect the skin care choices’ could be partly adopted. Suggestions and implications that can be presented by this study is largely accessible from the aspects of the independent service providers and users. First, in the case of the skin care salons as service providers, they are divided into medical skin care and general skin care salons. In the case of medical skin care salon, it appeared to require active promotion of their services. In order to maintain continuous customer attraction, efforts such as providing various procedural cases according to the use of service are required. In other words, the level of user recognition of their needs or the satisfaction level of users would increase if the service procedure and the results are provided to the users in advance. The general skin care salons relatively need more efforts to ensure a level of trust and affordable price compared to medical skin care salons. Although they have many facilities to have a relatively easy access to services, the satisfaction level and reuse intention level turned out to be relatively low. It signifies that the users use the facilities relatively easily depending on the recommendation of friends, acquaintances and people they interact with, but as the satisfaction level after the actual use is relatively low, it does not link to reuse. Therefore, efforts are required to raise the level of trust for the service. In addition, considering the fact that people trust more of the user reviews rather than advertisement, it is needed to provide a good quality of service as well. Despite the differences in service between medical skin care salons and general skin care salons, it is needed to examine whether the price is fair compared to the service in consideration of the user’s expenditure. On the other hand, efforts of service users to choose suitable service for themselves and for their own skin are required. The results of the study show that most
