The objective of this study was to investigate the participation of adult learners in lifelong learning, and to analyze the factors that affect the satisfaction level and learning outcomes in lifelong learning such as personal background, economic background, participation purpose, and participation characteristics. The results from this study is expected to broaden the understanding of participation purpose and characteristics of adult learners and provide implications required for finding effective means for participation in lifelong learning to improve satisfaction level and learning outcomes. The source of analysis is obtained from the 8th year raw data of '2014 Lifelong Learning Conditions of Korean Adults', and the subject of study is chosen from the analysis data consisting of 1,702 individuals having participated in the informal education through lifelong learning institutes, private educational institutes, or Internet lectures. The methods for analysis used were frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, independent sample T-test, one-way variance analysis, and multiple regression analysis.
The results deduced from the above research process are as follows. First, when the lifelong learning participation of adult learners was examined, 50.4% of adult learners participated in at least 1 job related lifelong learning program each year, and 22.2% participated in at least 1 program per year that can lead to certification. Also, it was found that the number of lifelong learning programs each person participated in was 1.46 on average per year, the number of hours of participation was 125.77, and the cost of learning was around KRW 417,600. Especially, when the differences in personal background, economic background, and participation purpose for participation characteristics were analyzed, the distinction in participation characteristics was dependent on all variables.
Second, out of 5 points, satisfaction level and learning outcomes of adult learners were quite high on average at 4 points and 3.9 points, respectively, and when differences in lifelong learning satisfaction level and learning outcomes were analyzed for personal background, economic background, participation purpose, or participation characteristics, satisfaction level and learning outcomes depended on most of the set variables.
Third, when the factors affecting the satisfaction level of adult learners in lifelong learning were examined, the satisfaction level was found to be high in the following cases: women in gender, small and medium sized cities in residence, married in marital status, high monthly household income, and non-career related participation purpose.
Next, the factors affecting learning outcomes were examined by dividing into personal, career, and social performances. Personal outcomes were high for individuals that are married in marital status, are childless, have participated in programs unrelated to career, have participated in high number of programs, have spent longer period of time in programs, or are high in lifelong learning satisfaction level. The career or social outcomes were high for individuals with highest level of schooling being high school or lower, those unemployed or economically inactive in state of economic activity, those participating in programs unrelated to career, and those with high satisfaction level in lifelong learning.
Through research, it was confirmed that the factors affecting satisfaction and learning outcomes of adult learners in lifelong learning included personal background, economic background, participation purpose, and participation characteristics. Especially, when participating with purposes unrelated to career, the satisfaction level and learning outcomes increased, and greater learning outcomes were attained when the satisfaction level were higher for lifelong learning.
Therefore, in order to improve satisfaction level and learning outcomes in lifelong learning, lifelong learning institutes must understand the attributes of adult learners and design programs that carefully reflect the various needs, and the government must apply policy efforts to promote participation in diverse programs other than those related to career. Such efforts will not only improve the quality of lifelong learning programs and increase the personal satisfaction level and outcomes, but also upgrade career and social outcomes for the contribution to the accomplishment of lifelong learning ideology.
