The purpose of this study was to determine how group expressive arts therapy using traditional play affected depression and life satisfaction in the elderly population. 16 elders who were using OO Senior Welfare Center in Seoul and met the purpose of this study were divided into the experimental (N=8) and control groups (N=8). A group expressive arts therapy program using traditional play was run in a total of 10 sessions 50 minutes per session on a weekly basis in the experimental group from February 26 to April 29, 2016. The Korean Form of Geriatric Depression Scale(KGDS) and the Life Satisfaction Scale(UCLA) were used and Wilcoxon signed-rank test was performed using an SPSS 22.0 program to determine the effectiveness in pretest and posttest. The changes found during the course of group expressive arts therapy and the changes in contents between pretest and posttest using K-HTP drawing test were analyzed. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, group expressive arts therapy using traditional play was effective in reducing depression in the elderly population. After the program, the experimental group showed significant changes in the level of depression (z=-1.97, p<.05). Second, expressive arts therapy using traditional play was effective in improving life satisfaction in the elderly population. After the program, the experimental group showed significant changes in the level of life satisfaction (z=-2.10, p<.05). Third, during the course of the group expressive arts therapy program using traditional play, the elderly gave positive support to one another in the group and showed positive changes based on active interaction and recovery of self-confidence as sessions progressed. The improvement of relationships with others in the group and recovery of self-confidence led to a positive self-image, which probably helped the elderly reduce depression; then, the reduction in depression led to a psychologically stable state in life and improved life satisfaction for the elderly. To put the results together, group expressive arts therapy using traditional play was effective in reducing depression in old age, which led to the improvement in life satisfaction. This study is significant in that it applied a group expressive arts therapy program using traditional play to the elderly in therapeutic practice and presented an effective plan in preventing depression and improving life satisfaction in old age.
