ABSTRACT
A Study on Sexual Consciousness and School Sex Education Needs in High School Students
Kim Eun Jeong Major in Child Welfare & Early Childhood Education Department of Child Welfare Studies Graduate School of Woosuk University Supervised by Professor Ha Seung Min
The purpose of this study is to concretely examine the differences in sexual consciousness, the actual state of school sex education, and the needs for sex education contents in high school students according to genders and school types. Further, the results of this study are meaningful in being utilized as the materials for school sex education in the front line fields of high schools. In order to achieve this purpose, this study used the structured questionnaire over the subjects of 2,155 students attending high schools located in 14 cities and counties of Jeollabuk-do. For data analysis, this study conducted frequency analysis and cross-tabulation analysis, and calculated means and standard deviations. This study derived several conclusions based upon research results and discussions. First, according to the results of examining sexual consciousness in high school students, it is necessary to perform school sex education differently according to genders. Male students acquired sex information through internet, whereas female students obtained sex information through school sex education. This implies that male students can be exposed to stimulating and interest-oriented sex information in their defenseless state more than female students, so that it is necessary to execute school sex education methods differently in male and female students. In addition, it is necessary to understand dating in high school students. According to the results of this study, 66.4% of female students, 61.1% of male students, 63.1% of humanities high school students, and 64.2% of vocational high school students responded that they experienced dating. They responded that the advantage of dating is ‘I am not lonely’, 28.1% of female students and 28.5% of humanities high school students responded that the disadvantage of dating is ‘it is difficult to concentrate on study’, 33.5% of male students and 33.9% of vocational high school students responded that ‘I do not know’ its disadvantage. This implies that high school students perceive dating as positive. In contrast, the persons in charge of school sex education and their parents perceive dating as negative, which shows their differences. In order to reduce these differences, it is necessary to endeavor to respect and understand their opinions mutually. Second, according to the results of analyzing the actual state of school sex education, it is necessary to conduct situational education according to school types. Vocational high school students acquired sex information through school sex education more than humanities high school students. In the persons in charge of sex education, vocational high school students received sex education from sex education experts more abundantly and more frequently than humanities high school students. In satisfaction with sex education, vocational high school students were higher than humanities high school students. In the reasons for dissatisfaction with sex education, 24.1% of humanities high school students and 17.1% of vocational high school students responded that the time for sex education is insufficient, and 31.8% of humanities high school students and 33.0% of vocational high school students responded that sex education is boring, which shows differences. Vocational high school students hoped the class through interesting explanation, whereas humanities high school students hoped the class providing sufficient and correct knowledge, which shows their differences. In the reason why sex education is necessary, vocational high school students responded with ‘in order to prevent students’ sexual damages’, whereas humanities high school students responded with ‘in order to have right sexual ethics and sexual morality’, which shows their differences. Thus, because needs are different according to school types and school situations are different, it is necessary that the class for sex education should be performed appropriately to school types. In addition, according to the results of examining satisfaction with the class for sex education, it was most satisfactory that sex education was executed in the class for related school subjects (biology, physical education, home economics, or ethics etc.) and the teachers in charge were home economics and technology teachers and the methods for sex education were broadcast education and instructor special lectures and the materials for sex education were moving picture materials. Third, according to the results of analyzing sex education needs, in sex education contents necessary according to genders, male students were higher in the needs for contents about male and female genital organs, masturbation, and sexual desire/ sexual impulse. In contrast, female students were higher in the needs for contents about ‘pregnancy and childbirth’, ‘marriage and home’, ‘love and friendship’, ‘physical and psychological development in adolescence’, ‘dating’, ‘decision making training’, ‘clear self-assertiveness’, ‘keeping chastity’, ‘contraceptive education’, ‘venereal diseases/ AIDS’, ‘sexual violence’, ‘the meaning of gender equality’, ‘the artificial termination of pregnancy(abortion)’, ‘sex and mass media’, and ‘the commercialization of sex’. According to school types, humanities high school students were higher in the needs for most sex education contents including ‘decision making training’ and ‘clear self-assertiveness’ than vocational high school students. According to the results of this study, there were differences in sex education needs as well as there were a lot of differences in the necessity for school sec education, the reasons why sex education is necessary, sex informants, and needed sex education methods according to genders and school types. Although educational authorities endeavor after school sex education in diverse ways, there were still many parts not to reflect adolescents’ needs. It is required to reflect adolescents’ needs more systematically and try more sufficiently to establish the correct understanding of sex in schools.
