The Research Trends Analysis on Art Therapy for People with Developmental Disabilities

In this study, 12-year period from 2003 to 2015, is an analysis of the total of 31 articles of the art therapy for developmental disabilities in domestic dissertation. The aims of the study are for art therapy to provide basic data as an arbitration for people with developmental disabilities and to help the systematic study. Such conclusions obtained according to the purpose are as follows.
First, the study subjects on art therapy for people with developmental disabilities for the recent 12 years have been various. Research aimed at the improvement of the social in its was the most common.

Second, the most arbitration used in art therapy programs are group art therapy and mixed art therapy programs, carried out in educational institutions, twice a week, less than 40 minutes to 60 minutes, was carried out at 11 times to 15 session it is. Mixed art therapy programs were conducted with various art materials like paints, clay, color sand, pelt, collage, colored pencils and so on.
Third, in aspect of years, steady study had been done from 2003 to 2012. In 2013, there has not been any study thesis on people with developmental disabilities. But between 2014 and 2015, the study has restarted.
Fourth, in aspect of the study target, most of them were on preschool kids and elementary school students.
Fifth, in aspect of the study way, most of them were integrated studies combined experimental studies and qualitative analysis.
But after experiments, usually in many study theses, maintenance and generalized examination have not been done.
On the base of the above conclusions, some suggestions could be given for the followup study.
First of all, when analyzing the research paper related to developmental disabilities, due to the analysis is limited to domestic dissertation, there is a limit on the results and interpretation of the analysis.
After this, the study is required to be done in a large range including master’s theses, academic journals, books and scientific journals.
Second, in this study, only frequency analysis distribution has been calculated in the details of the study theses. However, art therapy in any part in the developmental disabilities, there is a need for meta-analysis in order to verify that there is objective and scientifically effect.
Third, as the study target, people with developmental disabilities have been selected but it should be followed to study other various people with developmental disabilities types; intellectual disabilities, autistic disorder, communication disorder, learning disability and brain lesions.
Fourth, in the research designs of art therapy, deep consideration in the scientific research designs is necessary in order to enhance reliability and validity of the study result. A lot of effort to adopt various ways of experimental study is required; prepost layout in an experimental groupa control group of the experiments which can enhance more reliability of the study than a single group prepost case studies.
