This study aims to find out the relationship between self-esteem and the types of communication between parents and children, and whether the communication has mediated effects on the relationship between self-esteem of parents and children.
The subjects of this study were 180 adolescents attending middle and high school located in Suncheon, and their fathers and mothers.
The tools of investigation were PACI (Parent- Adolescent
Communication Inventory), SEI(Self-Esteem Inventory), and ISE(Index of Self-Esteem).
By using The SPSS 20.0 statistics program, the collected data were analyzed calculating frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, and conducting Cronbach's , α Pearson's Correlation Analysis, a series of regression analyzes presented by Baron and Kenny(1986) and Sobel verification.
The followings are the findings of this research. First, there was a positive correlation among general self-esteem, self-esteem to self-deprecating, self-esteem on the relationship with others,self-esteem for the popular and leadership, self-esteem for self-assertion and anxiety of children and parents' self-esteem.
Second, there was that functional communication indicated a positive correlation and dysfunctional communication showed a negative correlation. In other words, the higher self-esteem of the parents can be achieved, the more functional communication can be made.
Third, when functional communication was made, self-esteem of the children indicated a positive correlation. Also, when dysfunctional communication was made, self-esteem of the children implied a negative correlation.
Fourth, as the communication was inserted with the father's
self-esteem, it is still important to note that there is a partial
mediator effect. That’s because the father's self-esteem had influence on self-esteem of their children. In other words, as father's self-esteem becomes higher, a unctional communication can made more, which leads to increased self-esteem of their children.
Fifth, as mother's self-esteem is inserted with the communication, the impact of self-esteem of the mothers on that of their children disappeared. Instead, it turned out that mother-child communications influence the self-esteem of their children having fully mediated effects. In other words, functional communications has more
important role of highly building self-esteem of their children than self-esteem of mothers.
This study is significant in that it has integrally covered
self-esteem of parents and parent-child communication for the self-esteem of their children. According to the results, we could find that self-esteem of children can be built positively, the development and propagation of a program for parents focusing on communications as well as the formation of parents’ self-esteem are needed.
