The purpose of this study was to investigate how preschoolers' play behaviors cluster according to gender and identify the differences in the adjustment and problem behaviors according to the play behavior cluster. The subjects are 322 preschoolers aged 3 and 4 who attend 5 different preschool in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon. To measure preschooler's play behavior, this study applied The Preschool Play Behavior Scale(PPBS) developed by Coplan and Rubin(1998) and adapted by Jo Eun-ok(2001). To measure preschooler's adjustment, this study applied The Preschool Adjustment Questionnaire(PAQ) developed by Jewsuwan, Luster and Kostelink(1993) adapted by Kim Nan-young and Shin Yoo-lim(2001). To measure problem behavior, this study applied The Preschool and Kindergarten Behavior Scale(PKBS) developed by Merrell(1996) and adapted by Lee Jin-sook(2001). To analyze the data, descriptive statistics for each variable were calculated and t-test and correlation analysis were conducted. The preschooler's play behavior was analyzed by cluster analysis, The ANOVA was conducted to investigate the differences in preschooler's adjustment and problem behaviors according to the clustered play behaviors. The main results of this study are as follows: First, measurement variables were significant differences according to gender. The frequency of social play was higher in girls and the frequency of rough-play was higher in boys. The preschooler's adjustment showed that girls were higher at the level of prosociality and preschool routine adjustment and Problem behaviors showed that boys were significantly higher at the level of hyperactivity and aggression. Second, as the frequency of reticent behavior higher, the adjustment level was low and the level of problem behaviors were high. As the frequency of solitary-passive play higher, the adjustment level was high and also level of internalizing problem behaviors were high. The higher the frequency of solitary-active play, the higher the problem behaviors. As the frequency of social play higher, the adjustment level was high and the hyperactivity, social withdrawal and anxiety were low. As the frequency of rough-play higher, the adjustment level was high and also the level of externalizing problem behaviors were high. Third, boys and girls were each clustered into four types, each showing distinctive play characteristics. Boys' play behavior clusters were classified into 'balanced play group', 'non-social play preference group', 'social interaction play preference group', and 'rough-play preference group'. Girls' play behavior clusters were classified into 'solitary and social play preference group', 'non participation group', 'non-social play preference group', and 'social play preference group'. Fourth, according to boys' play behavior group, the group with the highest score in adjustment and the group with the lowest score in problem behavior are the 'balanced play group'. 'social interaction preference group' also showed good adjustment and low level of problem behaviors. On the other hand, 'non-social play preference group' boys showed low adaptability and high level of internalizing problem behaviors. Meanwhile, boys of 'rough-play preference group' showed high level of problem behavior as well as peer competence. Fifth, according to girls' play behavior group, girls in 'solitary and social play preference group' and 'social play preference group' showed high level of adjustment and low level of problem behaviors. The 'non - participation group' showed the lowest adjustment level and the highest problem behavior level. Girls in the 'non-social play preference group' did not experience serious maladjustment, but had internalizing problem behaviors. Together, only the degree of difference appears, and the preschoolers tended to play various play types at the same time, and there was a difference in the preferred play according to gender. Also, preschoolers who participate evenly in various plays are adaptive, and preschoolers who play less have maladjustment. Preschoolers who prefer to solitary play and rough-play were differences in adjustment and problem behaviors according to the participation level in social play. In other words, if preschoolers who prefer to solitary play or rough-play are vulnerable to social play, problem behaviors are highly evaluated, but it was evaluated as adaptive if the preschoolers who prefer to solitary play or rough-play participate well in social play. This can be interpreted as a positive element of social play to alleviate the negative aspects of other plays. The results of this study can re-illuminate the educational meaning of preschooler's play and provide meaningful implications for teachers to understand and guide play behavior of preschooler.
