Many actors are well aware of the importance and feel the need to use observation in their character creation. However, they don’t know how to observe, what to select as an observation object, and how to apply observation to acting. This is because of the specific selection methods of observation objects and observation methods required for acting have not been suggested so far. Therefore, this study set it as the primary purpose to present detailed training methods of observation for acting.
First, we reviewed the meaning of observation from an actor’s viewpoint and discussed the characteristics of observation from a perspective of performing arts. Also, we reviewed the ‘observation’ methods in the process of character creation, which we took as a foundation for the character creation process to be discussed later.
Second, we tried to approach the specific observation training methods and the process of character creation of in detail. First of all, we analyzed the work and the characters for acting expressions of actors. We had the study subjects examine their own personality and physical body based on self-observation, and then helped them select characters to observe by comparing themselves with the roles and perform it. Finally, we conducted animal observation to find ways to understand the characters from various perspectives and specifically realize them. After that, the study subjects conducted an activity of selecting a character to observe for character creation and applied observation training methods adequate to the characters they wanted to create.
Third, we presented the results of the performance, conducted a survey on the audience and actors, and collected and summarized the survey questionnaires for an effective verification. In addition, in the appendix, we presented effective utilization methods of character creation based on observation by providing the questionnaires about the survey on which methods actors used for training, and reached a conclusion about the importance of actors’ character creation by verifying the effectiveness of observation in specific acting expressions.
This observation training process allowed actors to discover the inner and outer principles and characteristics of human life. Thus, it provided abundant materials for the creation of a role and gave acting legitimacy to actors, and allowed them to break out of the banal acting routine and to depict a character who could be trusted by the audience. Therefore, observation can serve as a good material to awaken the inspiration of actors in character creation.
It is expected that the results of this study on observation and character creation methods using observation will contribute to helping many actors create reliable characters in the theaters.
