The purpose of this study is to examine what Taekwondo Master think important in teaching Taekwondo to children and to investigate in depth the conflicts in educational values and the process of overcoming them that Taekwondo Master experience while teaching children. To accomplish the purpose of this study, the following three research problems were defined. First, what is the educational value of children’s Taekwondo Master? Second, what are the educational value conflicts of children’s Taekwondo Master? Third, what is the process of overcoming the educational value conflicts of children’s Taekwondo Master? The participants in this study were selected among the children’s Taekwondo Master in Daegu, South Korea who had at least 10 years’ experience in teaching Taekwondo to children. The data for this study was collected from related literature, in-depth interviews, and non-participant observation between June and September 2016 and the collected data was examined through qualitative analysis. The truth and ethics of research were verified through the data collection and analysis process. The analysis results of the data collected in this study are as follows. First, the educational values of Taekwondo Master are pleasure, physical development, social development, and personality development. In regard to enjoyment, child trainees constantly visit Taekwondo through interest, achievement, and confidence. Physical development refers to physical growth, the development of physical functions, and the development of exercise capacity. As for physical growth, Taekwondo helps physical growth by stimulating large and small muscles that are not used in daily life. The development of physical functions refers to the development of physical functions more than average through activities in the Taekwondo studio. The development of exercise capacity refers to the development of exercise capacity through the body movements such as running, kicking, and Poomsae in the Taekwondo studio. Second, educational value conflicts are largely divided into two types: conflicts in Taekwondo instruction and conflicts in Taekwondo studio management. The conflicts in Taekwondo instruction include various difficulties of instruction, the excessive proportion of play in the program, and the difficulty of Taekwondo belt test. The difficulties of instruction included the difficulty of control, difficulty of teaching skills, and difficulty of communication. The excessive proportion of play in the program occurs when the Taekwondo studio turns into a playground because Taekwondo is instructed as play-like physical education to emphasize pleasure. The cause of the difficulty in Taekwondo belt test is lack of Taekwondo training time when preparing for the belt test supervised by the Kukkiwon. The conflicts in Taekwondo studio management include the decreasing number of trainees, the insecurity in the proportion of kindergarten class, and intensifying competition among studios. The decreasing number of trainees is associated with the population decline. New studios open continuously while the population of children is decreasing each year. The insecurity in the proportion of kindergarten class refers to the difficulty in the management of Taekwondo studio that is caused by a small kindergarten class leading to a small elementary class. In regard to the intensifying competition among studios, around 2,000 people graduate from the departments of Taekwondo in universities each year. As a result, competition intensifies and Master try to provide more exciting services. Third, regarding the process of overcoming educational value conflicts, children’s Taekwondo Master are coping well, knowing that the age group of trainees is becoming younger. In this process, Taekwondo Master shape their own educational values and teach children in accordance with them. This process consists of confusion, management difficulty, acknowledgement of the reality, overcoming and endeavoring, and stabilization stages. In the confusion stage, the children’s Taekwondo Master are confused about how to teach children. In the management difficulty stage, Master recognize that if they do not accept children, they will register in other studios. In the acknowledgement of the reality stage, the Master recognize the importance of the kindergarten class from the viewpoint of instructor and business manager, discover and acknowledge their shortcomings in teaching children in the studio. In the overcoming and endeavoring stage, the Master strive to let children enjoy Taekwondo. They create their own teaching methods and try to give satisfaction to and win trust from parents through special event lessons. As a business manager, they hire Master who are suitable to teach the kindergarten class, prepare a space dedicated to the kindergarten class and buy teaching aids, and reinvest in the parts that are not directly related to teaching Taekwondo. Consequently, the number of trainees increases. In the stabilization stage, the instruction method that improves the Taekwondo abilities of the kindergarten class while giving pleasure to them is stabilized and a virtuous circle is created in the number of trainees of the studio, stabilizing the income of the Master.
