This study was a cross-sectional and descriptive study to investigate associations of health promoting behaviors and leisure activities with quality of life and nursing performance among shift-work nurses. It was attempted to improve quality of life of shift-work nurses and enhance their nursing performance. Data were collected from September 1st to 13th, 2016 from shift-work nurses with at least two months of working experiences at a tertiary hospital in Metropolitan City I. Among 210 copies of distributed questionnaires, a total of 191 copies were included for the final analysis after excluding those with insufficient responses. To examine differences in the quality of life and nursing performance by general characteristics t-test and ANOVA were used. Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analysis were used to identify relationships among variables. The results are as follows: 1) Shift-work nurses experienced a high level of sleep disturbance. Regarding dietary attitudes, 51.8% of respondents were “normal” and 44% “poor,” while there were no participants showing “excellent” dietary attitudes. In terms of intensive physical activities, participants who did not such activities less than once a week accounted for 74.9%; 64.9% of respondents said they did not even moderate physical activities less than once a week. Nurses with a lack of leisure activities accounted for 71.8%, whereas those who said that their leisure activities were very sufficient was a mere 0.5%. 2) Factors acssociated with quality of life among shift-work nurses included sleep disturbance (B=-0.16, p<.01), dietary attitude (B=0.23 p<.01) and leisure activities (B=0.17, p<.001). The strongest factor was leasure activity, followed by sleep disturbance. That is, more sleep disturbance led to a lower quality of life; more positive dietary attitude and more frequent leisure activities resultes in a higher quality of life. 3) Quality of life among shift-work nurses was significantly associated with nursing performance (B=0.26, p<.01). That is, a higher quality of life led to a higher nursing performance. Based on the study finding, sufficient health promoting behavior and leisure activities could have a positive impact on improving quality of life, which boosts nursing performance further. Improvement in the quality of life of nurses leads to enhancement of quality of nursing. Accordingly, it is significant to secure health promoting behavior and leisure activities to improve nursing performance and ensure a better patient outcomes. Under the circumstances where shift work cannot be avoided, personal efforts of nurses to establish their own living standards and have a guide for living suitable for each person will benefit not only their own health and quality of life, but also patient health.
