The purpose of this study is to reveal the differences and characteristics in the composition of Gayageum Byungchang by comparing the Gayageum Byungchang of master Pansori singers and master Gayageum musicians of the Japanese colonial era. This era is categorized as the beginning period and first golden age of Gayageum Byungchang. The early musical characteristics of Gayageum Byungchang, sung by Pansori masters based on Pansori, and Gayageum Byungchang, sung by Gayageum masters based on Gayageum, are very important factors in understanding the aspects of change in Gayageum Byungchang from the beginning to modern times. whichisbecause the value as a preserved record in its original form is highly assessed, especially in the case of gramophone records. Therefore, this study intends to compare and analyze how the components of Pansori and Gayageum Sanjo are projected in the early forms of Gayageum Byungchang.
To begin, origin and chronological characteristics are broadly examined and categorized by periods of beginning, depression, revival, and transition based on research through documents, various articles, and other data. The following results are derived from a comparative analysis of the musical structures of the Danga and Noon Daemok of Gayageum Byungchang, which started from Pansori masters and Gayageum masters, through the classifications of Maru and Buchimsae, musical components, frequency and scale of the notes, type of Gayageum accompaniment, etc. focused on restored gramophone records.
The results of examining the Buchimsae, which shows the rhythm type of the sounding part of a Gayageum Byungchang of the masters of Pansori and Gayageum in the beginning era, showed that Pansori masters played the Gayageum to the rhythmical sound in its original form by using various rhythm types such as Daemadi-jangdan, Ingyeo-geori, Wanja-geori, Ut-Buchim, Gyosup, etc. In contrast, Gayageum masters simplified sound and limited the types of rhythms using almost all the rhythmical structures of Daemadi-jangdan. By examining the musical structures of Gayageum Byungchang, the Pansori masters used various bridge forms. Since it is difficult to continuously make sounds that are high-pitched or require techniques, fancy musical structures are made by pausing sounds and frequently borrowing bridge-type forms of accompaniment. On the other hand, Gayageum masters rarely used bridge-types. In addition, this study examined the frequency and scale of the notes. The master Pansori singers showed more frequent sounds than Gayageum, which indicated that the music was based more on Pansori sounds. Since the master Gayageum musicians focused more on accompaniment, they showed Gayageum sounds more often. Moreover, the Gayageum accompaniment was classified into four types including basic-type, reduced-type, expanded-type, and accompaniment–type. The basic-type occurred the most in both Pansori and Gayageum masters while the reduced-type occurred in Pansori masters, and the expanded-type in Gayageum masters. According to these findings, this study revealed that Pansori masters focus on sounds while pausing accompaniment and only used beats to fill voids, and Gayageum masters focus on the accompaniment of the Gayageum, creating fancy accompaniment when a sound is made to be used as an instrumental tool to support and emphasize the sound.
The early creation process and musical characteristics of Gayageum Byungchang, which originated from both Pansori masters and Gayageum masters, are the starting points of Gayageum Byungchang as a performance itself and at the same time considered to be an essential subject for research for investigating the musical components of Gayageum Byungchang. Therefore, the musical components such as Buchimsae, musical components, frequency and scale of the notes, type of Gayageum accompaniment, etc. of early Gayageum Byungchang researched in this study are expected to help the investigation of the identity of genre of Gayageum Byungchang or musical restoration, as well as aid in the development and organization of a new repertory.
