The purpose of this study is to explore the infant's attempt, frustration, and experiences with the verbal and non-verbal languages and also to analyse the strategies of the infant's social relationship development when they play with both of peers who are younger or older than them. For this study, 9 infants (0-year-old : 2, 1-year-old : 3, 2-year-old : 4) were selected in “E” daycare center from March 2016 to July 2016. The 1-year-old infants were engaged as the primary participants in exploring their social relationship development. The research questions and their results obtained through this exploration study are as follows.
The first research question, “What is the process of developing a social relationship between 1-year-old infants?”
The process of developing a social relationship between the infants was analyzed based on the behaviors shown in free play time in their classroom. During the exploration period, the classroom teacher and the infants participated in several plays together. The linguistic interaction and intervention of the teacher were minimized. The teacher was only participating through the emotional response or the nonverbal response to the infants. The behavioral analysis of the 1-year-old infants was classified into the time of staying next to peers, the time of experiencing difficulties of a relationship, the time of intentional participation, and the time of playing with peers, centered on the behaviors naturally started to be observed. The general play behavior and the reaction of the 1-year-old infants appeared at the time of staying by the peer. The characteristic of their behaviors was that they watched the play or the face of each others, and stayed next to their peers by mimic action. The infants in the time of staying next to peers showed non-verbal approach and mimic behavior to develop their social relationship.
The time of experiencing difficulties of a relationship was mainly at the beginning of observation, and then the infants showed the behaviors by an physical attack for the purpose of taking toys from each other. The physical attack was considered as a one-sided behavior in a viewpoint of the infant who took the toys. On the other hand, the other party who was deprived of the toys repeatedly showed aggressive behaviors pushing out him. The infants on the process of developing a relationship made emotional expressions and showed behaviors by a physical attack during the period of experiencing difficulties of this relationship.
In the intentional participation time, the infants showed emotional reaction in order to inform the classroom teacher of their conflict situation. These behaviors seemed to be frowning or crying, and under this situation the infants tried to have another relationship based on interaction of the teacher. As the infants want to play with their peers, they go up close and give toys to the teacher as a mediator, and to try to participate in the play. They also give the toys to the other party in a silent way, and continue to have the relationship by approaching their peers and say, "Let’s play together~". Looking at the process of developing a relationship in the intentional participation time, the infants showed the behaviors which were to create a relationship through the teacher, to provide the toys, to have a relationship with the toys, to suggest a play in verbal language, and to call for reconciliation.
In the time of playing with their peers, the infants seemed to try to play with their peers. The intention of the relationship was clarified by suggesting a play in verbal language. They showed prosocial behaviors through handing out toys or understanding that the toys belonged to their peers, and their social relationships turned into situations of playing with their peers because of prosocial interaction. The infants showed the interest to their peers or tried to play together, while watching the faces and understanding the emotions of their opponents. In addition, they had time to see if their proposal was acceptable regardless of non-verbal or verbal approach.
The second research question is “What is the social relationship development strategies of 1-year-old infants shown to the 0-year-old peers?”
These are 1) Emotional expression 2) Avoiding 3) Showing prosociality 4) Being cautious 5) Assuming ignorance 6) Showing off the strength 7) Using negative words and gestures 8) Staying calm 9) 11) Clearing the toys.
The third research question is “What is the social relationship development strategies of 1-year-old infants shown to the 2-year-old peers?”
These are 1) Emotional expression according to the strategies of making a relationship 2) Moving backward by attempt and rejection 3) Demanding in non-verbal language 4) Participating in non-verbal play 5) Showing interest in physical contact 6) Trying out relationships by force 7) Participating actively in play with language expression 8) Observing play and feeling fun of participating 9) Showing friendly 10) Requesting in social language 11) Accepting play offering 12) Suggesting play.
Based on the above results, the following conclusions can be derived from this exploratory study.
Firstly, the process of social relationship development of the 1-year-old infants consist of 'time to stay next to peer', 'time to experience difficulties of relationship', 'intentional participation time', and 'time to play with peers'.
Secondly, 1-year-old infants perceive that 0-year-old infants are the human beings who need support in a social relationship. Thus they mainly use considerate behavioral strategies such as 'careful handling', 'not knowing', and 'avoiding' in contrast to a social relationship with 2-year-old infants.
Thirdly, the social relationship of 1-year-old infants toward 2-year-old infants as an interested human being is actively developed based on the strategy using a social language like “Thank you!”
Fourthly, the strategy used in the social relationship development of the 1-year-old infants is differently analysed according to the target peers, even though it has the same name on a classification .
Fifthly, 1-year-old infants use a strategy that is appropriate for the subject of relationship in developing the social relationship with their peers.
