Nowadays, consuming counterfeit products has become a significant social phenomenon in modern consumer culture and it is extremely hard to eradicate it without a drastic change of consumers’ awareness and fundamental understanding regarding consumer behavior. Therefore it is imperative to completely understand key variables which are potentially able to affect the formation of attitude on counterfeit products to resolve these problems and to search measures to utilize social phenomenon of consuming counterfeit products which already has organized a line of goods in a more positive direction. Thus, this paper intends to examine how two main independent variables, psychological motivation and consumer characteristics, which are expected to have a significant influence on traits of counterfeit products affect traits of counterfeit products first and then it compares them to the attitude toward brand-name products. Next, it examines how similarity to original products has a moderating effect in the relation of psychological motivation, consumer characteristics and attitude toward counterfeit products and how social face sensitivity has a moderating effect in the relation of attitude on counterfeit products and intention to purchase counterfeit products. To verify them we conducted a survey based on references with newly-set research model and hypotheses. We surveyed 450 female and male citizens of twenty years old or above who reside in Daegu and Kyungpook area from September 15 to September 24, 2016. Among them uncollected and uncompleted survey questionnaires are excluded and 353 valid survey questionnaires left are used for practical analysis. After testing hypotheses, 12 hypotheses were adopted among 17 hypotheses and the results are described below. First, hypothesis 1 aims to examining how psychological motivation factors affect the attitude toward counterfeit products. Results of testing hypothesis show that materialism and influence of the reference group have a positive influence on attitude toward counterfeit products and conspicuous consumption propensity has a negative influence on it on the contrary. It implies that consumers regard counterfeit products as goods which satisfy materialistic satisfaction rather than conspicuous consumption and they try to justify their counterfeit product-preference behavior through the reference group. Second, hypothesis 2 verifies how consumer characteristics affect the attitude toward counterfeit products. Results of testing hypothesis prove that price sensitivity and brand preference do not have any significant impact on the attitude towards counterfeit products. It implies consumers are insensitive to the prices of counterfeit products and are not likely to consume counterfeit products based on their usual luxury brand preferences. Third, hypothesis 3 is to observe how the attitude toward counterfeit products affects consumers’ intention to purchase counterfeit products. It is revealed that the attitude toward counterfeit products have a positive influence on intention to purchase counterfeit products. In other words, consumers who possess higher materialistic desires or perceive higher level of influence of the reference group form more positive attitude toward counterfeit products and such consumers imply higher chance to purchase them practically. In conclusion, to control two independent variables (materialism and influence of the reference group, which are verified to have a positive influence on formation of the attitude toward counterfeit products) more effectively would perhaps be a fundamental measure to eradicate consuming counterfeits products. Fourth, hypothesis 4, comparison hypothesis, is to examine the degree of difference between influence of consumer characteristics on counterfeit products and on attitude toward brand-name products. It is proved that psychological motivation and consumer characteristics have a higher positive influence on the attitude toward brand-name products than the attitude toward counterfeit products. It implies that when we compare genuine influence between independent variables without containing specific moderating variable, the influence of independent variable on brand-name products are much bigger than counterfeit ones and consumers show more positive attitude by a great deal on actual brand-name goods rather than on counterfeit products which have an alternative characteristic of such brands. If similarity to original products which is set as a moderating variable in this study has a moderating effect to reinforce a positive relationship between consumer characteristics and the attitude toward counterfeit products (hypothesis 5 and 6), counterfeit products are closer to the characteristics of brand-name ones. Similarity to original products which helps consumers to perceive counterfeit products as brand-name ones is a threat required to be concerned by the relevant workers of luxury goods industry. Fifth, hypothesis 5 and 6 are to verify the existence of moderating effect of similarity to original products in the relation of psychological motivation, consumer characteristics and the attitude toward counterfeit products. Test results show that similarity to original products has a moderating effect which reinforces the positive relationship between materialism, influence of reference group, and brand preference and attitude on counterfeit products, on the other hand, it has no moderating effect in the relationship of conspicuous consumption propensity, price sensitivity and attitude on counterfeit products. To sum up, the higher the degree of similarity to original products in consumers’ perception, the higher good impression they have because they feel counterfeit products as genuine ones. Lastly, hypothesis 7 is to examine the moderating effect of social face sensitivity in the relation of attitude toward counterfeit products and intention to purchase them. Here it has been observed that higher degree of social face sensitivity has a moderating effect which reinforces a positive influence of the attitude toward counterfeit products on intention to purchase them. It implies social face sensitivity is a significant moderating variable to raise purchasing desires for counterfeit products and thus a number of consumers believe they can save their face by purchasing brand-name products as well as counterfeit products (which are copied ones). Through the analyses, this paper attempts to enhance our overall understanding on the current status of consumption of counterfeit products which is prevailed in Korean society and to deduct theoretical and practical implications to contribute to sound consumer culture.
